Real Madrid midfielder Federico Valverde opened up about his penalty shootout regret following the Spanish club’s win against Manchester City in the Champions League quarter finals.
Speaking on Monday the eve of facing Bayern Munich in the first leg of the tournaments’ semifinals, Valverde admitted that he asked to be left out of the penalty shootout in the second leg against Manchester City due to fatigue.
Valverde scored in the frantic 3-3 against City in the first leg at Santiago Bernabeu, but was not among the penalty takers in the shootout which followed the 1-1 in the return match at Etihad Stadium two weeks ago.
“I have the regret that that night I had the chance to leave a mark for Real Madrid, to reach the semifinals with a goal of my own”, Valverde said at a press conference.
“It still left a bitter taste, but sometimes you have to leave your pride aside and admit that you are not as ready as you think. Fatigue hit me in that moment and I spoke to the staff and I told them that I was not ready to take a penalty.”
Bayern Munich will be hosts for the first leg of their semifinal on Tuesday.
The return match will be in Madrid on May 8th.
