Ligue 1 is contested by 18 teams that fight for the title each year. The top four go into the UEFA Champions League next season. The fifth and the sixth play respectively in the UEFA Europa League and in the UEFA Europa Conference League. The lower three teams play in Ligue 2 next season.
Ligue 1 is a professional league since 11 September 1932, with specific rules for the participants. Best teams are Olympique Lyonnais, Paris Saint Germain, Monaco, Nantes, Lille. In the last years, Paris Saint Germain has dominated the French football. The league is the home of some exceptional talents that start from U-13.
Nantes holds the record for more wins in a single season, losing only one game in 38 weeks. Paris Saint Germain holds the record for most seasons survived in the top level. The competition format is subject to change, with participating teams that change. From 1930, the year of founding, until 1933, 20 teams were part of the first league in the country. Then in the season 1933-1934, only 14 clubs played in Ligue 1, achieving the lowest number of teams in history. Starting from 2023-2024 only 18 teams out of 20 teams play in Ligue 1.
