‘I felt I couldn’t help the team anymore’ | Son Heung-min explains international retirement decision

‘I felt I couldn’t help the team anymore’ admitted Tottenham Hotspur’s captain Son Heung Min on Thursday as he explained his reverse decision on retiring from international duty.

Son was reported to have considered retirement after his most recent international duty where he scored two goals against Thailand over two matches in the Asian qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The 31-year-old has featured in four AFC Asian Cup campaigns (2011, 2015, 2019 & 2024) with South Korea and at the most recent tournament in Qatar, his nation were knocked out by Jordan in the semifinal, triggering Jurgen Klinsmann to leave as head coach.

Son joined the North London club in August 2015 and has since established himself as one of the leading strikers in the Premier League, winning the top scorer award in the 2021-2022 season.
