UEFA has decided, unanimously, in the last meeting of the Executive Committee in Cyprus that the fifth vice president will be Armand Duka, succeeding in this way Luis Rubiales.
He maintained the position of a member of the Executive Committee since 2019 and has been an influential figure in the European Football government. Duka, also kept the position as the Albanian FA president since 2002, succeeding Mico Papadhopuli, and has led this federation and the Albanian football to new levels.
Albania is a new democracy [since 1990] and is located in the Western Balkans, a territory that has produced many football figures, including coaches and footballers. They have been progressing in many areas of the economy and Duka, previously educated in Economics, has been able to share a piece of the Economic Development in football infrastructure, building a new stadium in 2019 and contributing to the local football, with new training grounds and other facilities.
Albanian FA or as it is known locally the FSHF [Albanian Federation of Football] has been the promotor and the initiator of many infrastructure developments in clubs infrastructure in Lushnje, Sarande, Rrogozhine and Shijak and also in the improvement of conditions in Tropikal Training Centre in Durres.
Under his guidance, FSHF has also projected the building of 100 new football grounds, in order to give priority to the youngsters to play football but also to commemorate UEFA U-17 Championship in 2025. Four stadiums will host the competition in 2025, which would be the second major step for Albanian Football after hosting the first UEFA Conference Final in 2022, in Arena Kombetare Stadium.
Albania has made a major step forward in Women’s Football infrastructure, giving the chance to the young footballers to be part of women’s clubs. Vllaznia, the club of the city of Shkodra, with a renewed stadium in 2017, achieved in the groups of the UEFA Champions League playing with teams like Real Madrid, Paris Saint Germain, and Chelsea in the previous season.
This also has been reflected in the results that Albania has in the first squad. They achieved the groups of UEFA 2016, being second in their qualifiers and also keeping the first place in group E in these qualifiers, leaving behind the Czech Republic and Poland.
It is worth mentioning that the outstanding change from fifth place in the previous qualifiers to the Albanian National Team we know today is the result of hard work and sacrifice from the president and the staff, picking the right names to lead the national team and developing the advanced scouting system, chasing the right names in the European Clubs.
Today we can speak for a changed Albanian FA and the role that Mr. Duka has as a vice president helps the football in Western Balkans. UEFA and President Ceferin [who is from Bosnia and Herzegovina, also part of Western Balkans] will have increased attention in this region. With the stories of success going won we can expect more influential figures in the future for this reason, and this is at the end of the day not a product of coincidence or luck.
