Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool are set for a season filled with clashes, with this Premier League encounter marking the second of at least four meetings between the sides.
The pair were drawn against each other for the EFL Cup semi-finals earlier this week, and anticipation for their rivalry has only heightened following recent performances. Spurs head coach Ange Postecoglou lauded his team’s determination after their thrilling 4-3 victory over Manchester United on Thursday, achieved despite being without ten key players. Describing their consecutive wins as “ridiculous,” Postecoglou’s words underline the resilience his squad has displayed in challenging circumstances.
However, Spurs face a steep task this weekend as they look to improve on a difficult record against Liverpool. Tottenham have managed just two wins in their last 23 league meetings with the Reds, though one of those came in a 2-1 triumph at home last season. Pulling off a similar upset seems like a tall order, particularly as Tottenham have struggled when labeled as underdogs this campaign, losing five of their seven games in such scenarios.
Liverpool, on the other hand, have thrived in their favored role this season. Winning 20 of their 23 games across all competitions when entering as pre-match favorites, their consistency has been remarkable. Most recently, the Reds edged past Southampton 2-1 in the EFL Cup, adding yet another chapter to their strong start under manager Arne Slot.
Interestingly, Slot, who was heavily linked with Spurs during the summer of 2023, once labeled Tottenham as potential title contenders this season. While his views might have shifted slightly in light of their injury struggles, he is sure to approach this match with the seriousness it demands. Liverpool’s defensive vulnerabilities have surfaced recently, managing just three clean sheets in their last ten league games after starting the season with four shutouts in five matches. Even so, their unbeaten streak during that period highlights their ability to recover, often coming from behind to secure points.
For Spurs, Son Heung-min continues to shine as both a creative force and a scorer. The South Korean has provided the most assists (68) in Premier League history for Tottenham and has found the net in each of his last five games against Liverpool. His presence will be crucial if Tottenham are to counteract Liverpool’s firepower.
On the other side, Mohamed Salah is chasing history. With 13 goals and nine assists already this season, the Egyptian superstar is one assist away from becoming the first player to achieve double figures in both categories before Christmas in Premier League history. His knack for producing in big games makes him a constant threat.
Tottenham’s record against league leaders offers little encouragement, having lost nine of their last 11 matches against teams starting the day at the top of the table. Yet, football is unpredictable, and Postecoglou’s men have shown they can rise to the occasion, even when the odds are stacked against them.
As these two teams prepare to face off, the stage is set for an intense encounter. Liverpool’s attacking fluidity and Spurs’ spirited resilience promise an entertaining battle, with both sides eager to make a statement in their quest for a successful season.
