Southampton’s Premier League campaign has been a story of struggle and disappointment, with the Saints languishing at the bottom of the table.
Winning just one of their 22 league matches this season, their tally of six points is among the lowest ever recorded at this stage of a top-flight season. Only Bolton in 1902/03 managed fewer, with three points, highlighting the near-impossible task Southampton face to avoid relegation.
Their first hurdle in this uphill battle comes against Newcastle, a team that has been a thorn in their side in recent years. Southampton have won just one of the last 13 Premier League meetings between the two teams, a daunting record that new manager Ivan Juric will be desperate to overturn. However, Juric’s tenure has gotten off to a rough start, with five consecutive defeats under his leadership, leaving the Saints searching for their first win under his guidance.
On the other hand, Newcastle arrive at St. Mary’s with their sights set on solidifying their position at the top end of the table. Their momentum was briefly halted by a surprising 4-1 home defeat to Bournemouth last weekend, ending their joint-club record nine-match winning streak. However, Newcastle have shown resilience this season and will aim to avoid back-to-back defeats, a scenario they haven’t faced since October.
Newcastle’s recent away form offers plenty of encouragement. With three consecutive Premier League victories on the road, they are on the verge of a historic run. Another win would mark their first streak of four away league victories since October 1996, a testament to their impressive consistency under Eddie Howe’s management.
The Magpies have also been dominant against promoted sides, losing just one of their last 23 Premier League games against such opposition. They’ve been particularly ruthless in head-to-head matches with Southampton, winning all six meetings since Eddie Howe took charge. Additionally, Newcastle have excelled against teams in the lower reaches of the table, winning seven of their eight matches this season against sides starting the round in 15th place or below.
For Southampton, Paul Onuachu offers a glimmer of hope. The striker opened his account for the club in a dramatic 3-2 defeat to Nottingham Forest last week, scoring a stoppage-time goal to end his run of four first-half strikes at club level. Onuachu’s physical presence and knack for finding the net could be key for Southampton as they look to pull off an unlikely upset.
Newcastle, meanwhile, will rely on the all-around brilliance of Bruno Guimarães. The midfielder found the back of the net in last week’s defeat to Bournemouth, but his influence extends far beyond goals. Notably, he’s been fouled 76 times in the league this season, the highest of any player, reflecting how opponents often resort to physicality to try and contain him.
One area where Southampton must improve is their defense late in games. The Saints have conceded a league-high eight goals at home after the 75th minute this season, a worrying trend that has cost them valuable points. Newcastle, with their potent attack and clinical finishing, will undoubtedly look to exploit this vulnerability if the match remains close heading into the final stages.
This clash pits two teams with vastly different ambitions. Southampton are clinging to the faint hope of survival, while Newcastle are aiming to stay in the hunt for European qualification. The Saints will need to summon extraordinary resolve to take anything from this game, but Newcastle’s consistency and firepower make them strong favorites to come away with all three points.
