At the halfway mark of the Premier League season, Southampton find themselves in a dire situation at the bottom of the table.
Sitting eight points adrift of the team in 19th place, the Saints are desperate for a turnaround. New manager Ivan Jurić, who took charge last month, has yet to secure a point. His frustration was evident after the recent 2-1 loss to Crystal Palace, where he lamented the “really stupid goals” his side conceded.
The pressure is mounting for Southampton, who are on a four-match losing streak at home in the league. Their struggles at St Mary’s Stadium are well-documented, with just one win in their last 16 Premier League home fixtures. Hosting Brentford to kick off 2025 doesn’t make things easier, as the Saints have managed just one victory in six home meetings with the Bees this millennium. To make matters worse, Brentford’s three wins in this fixture all ended with a 2-0 scoreline, underlining the challenge ahead.
Brentford, however, are not without their own issues. Injury woes have compounded their struggles, leaving them winless in their last four league matches. Their most recent outing, a 3-1 defeat to Arsenal on New Year’s Day, has left Thomas Frank’s side languishing in the bottom half of the table. Despite being five points ahead of their position at this stage last season, the Bees seem stuck in mid-table limbo—neither in contention for European spots nor in immediate danger of relegation.
To climb out of this rut, Brentford need to address their dismal away form. They have not won on the road in the league since their final away match of last season, enduring a run of two draws and seven defeats since then. Alongside Southampton, they are one of only two teams yet to secure an away victory in the Premier League this term. However, their strong historical record at St Mary’s could provide a much-needed morale boost.
The spotlight will be on Tyler Dibling, one of Southampton’s emerging young talents. The academy graduate has already netted two goals this season, both of which were early openers within the first 20 minutes of play. His ability to make an impact will be crucial as the Saints look to find a spark. For Brentford, Nathan Collins stands out as a defensive stalwart and an attacking threat. The centre-back has contributed to three goals this season—two strikes and an assist—all in high-scoring matches featuring five or more goals.
One glaring issue for Southampton is their lack of firepower at home. With just seven goals scored at St Mary’s this season, they hold the lowest tally in the league, averaging a meager 0.78 goals per game. Finding a way to break this trend will be essential if they are to secure a much-needed result.
Brentford, on the other hand, will aim to capitalize on their opponent’s vulnerabilities while addressing their own inconsistencies. Despite their challenges, Thomas Frank’s side has shown flashes of quality, and a victory here could provide a significant boost as they look to push away from mid-table obscurity.
This clash sets the stage for a fascinating battle between two teams desperate for momentum. Southampton’s fight for survival and Brentford’s quest to rediscover form promise an engaging contest at St Mary’s.
