Sir Alex Ferguson, Messi’s decision to join Inter Miami and his mindset as a chairman of Inter Miami: Beckham says it all in an interview with Rio Ferdinand.

Former England captain David Beckham was known for pushing fashion boundaries during his playing days, much to the frustration of his then-manager, Sir Alex Ferguson.

However, now that Beckham is a club owner, he seems to have adopted a mindset more in line with Sir Alex than he might have expected.

In a chat with his old teammate Rio Ferdinand on Ferdinand’s YouTube channel, the two reminisced about how athletes in US sports, particularly basketball, often show off their fashion sense. They also mentioned how Barcelona players had tried doing something similar in football but were quickly stopped by their manager, Hansi Flick.

To Ferdinand’s surprise, Beckham admitted he had taken a similar stance with his own team, Inter Miami. Beckham, despite his well-known love for fashion, revealed that he had to put a stop to it. “Yeah, funnily enough, our team started doing it a couple of times and I stopped that,” Beckham shared, leaving Ferdinand shocked.

Rio, 45, couldn’t believe it, responding, “The man all about fashion, the man who broke down all the barriers…”

Beckham quickly explained, “Yeah, but we weren’t winning games at that point.”

Ferdinand immediately got it, adding, “That’s the key! If I’m the owner, I don’t wanna see you on social media if we’re sitting seventh or eighth. I can’t believe Mr. Fashion said no fashion at his football club.”

While Inter Miami may have had some struggles during that time, things have turned around since Lionel Messi joined the squad. With his former Barcelona teammates Luis Suarez, Sergio Busquets, and Jordi Alba also on board, the team is now topping MLS’s Eastern Conference.

Back in 2003, after Beckham left Manchester United, Sir Alex Ferguson had suggested that Beckham had become “distracted” after meeting his future wife, Victoria, with his growing interest in fashion playing a role. In an interview with Sports Illustrated, Ferguson had said, “He was blessed with great stamina, the best of all the players I’ve had here. But his life changed when he met his wife. She’s in pop, and David got a new image. He developed this ‘fashion thing.’ I saw his transition to a different person.”
