Semi-automated offside will be applied in La Liga next season

According to FIFA semi-automated offside is a support tool for the video match officials and the on-field officials to help them make faster, more precise, and more accurate offside decisions.

This tool is used in the World Cup and big Championships like Serie A.

RFEF has decided to implement this tool starting from the 2024-25 La Liga season and will be one of the new technologies implemented in the Spanish leagues starting from this year.

“It is the RFEF’s intention to continue to maintain the video refereeing assistance service, incorporating semi-automatic offside detection (SAOT) technology into this system.

“This technology is already present in some of the best football competitions in Europe and the world, as it has shown a very significant improvement in the assessment of offside plays and in the reduction of the time for decision-making on this issue, providing credibility and reliability to them.

“To this end, the RFEF is calling for tenders to contract the provision of video assistance services for various official RFEF competitions and other ancillary services.”

This technology did not seem to be 100% accurate in the Premier League though with the case of the disallowed goal of Luiz Diaz against Tottenham, on Sep 30, 2023.
