Ruud van Nistelrooy, a legend of Manchester United, is on the radar for a managerial return to English football, with Leicester City reportedly making him their top priority.
The former striker, who scored an impressive 150 goals in 219 appearances for the Red Devils, has been approached by the Foxes following their decision to part ways with Steve Cooper.
Reports suggest that Leicester’s interest in Van Nistelrooy is serious, with the club keen to secure his services to spearhead their revival. Renowned journalist Rudy Galetti shared on social media platform X, “Leicester have approached Ruud van Nistelrooy to explore the negotiation margins to replace Steve Cooper on their bench. David Moyes and other names are under evaluation, but Leicester would like to convince the manager (Van Nistelrooy) as a priority.”
At 48 years old, Van Nistelrooy has already made a mark in management. His brief stint as interim manager at Manchester United was a success, with the club winning three and drawing one of the four matches under his guidance. Despite the positive results, his time at Old Trafford was cut short when Ruben Amorim took over and opted to bring in his own coaching staff.
Leicester, now navigating life outside the Premier League, are eager to appoint a manager with the stature and experience to restore the club’s fortunes. While other candidates, including David Moyes, are reportedly being considered, Van Nistelrooy’s Premier League pedigree and growing reputation as a manager make him an attractive prospect for the King Power outfit.
However, Leicester City isn’t the only club eyeing the Dutchman. According to Sky Germany, Bundesliga 2 side Hamburg are also exploring the possibility of bringing Van Nistelrooy on board. The German club recently dismissed their head coach, Steffen Baumgart, and view the former striker as a strong candidate to take over.

Florian Plettenberg reported, “Hamburger SV are considering Ruud van Nistelrooy. Following the dismissal of Steffen Baumgart, Hamburg are now exploring several options. The 48-year-old Van Nistelrooy (formerly a striker at HSV) is on the list and has already been discussed internally. Van Nistelrooy was already a topic of discussion before Baumgart became head coach. Back then, there were already concrete talks with the Dutchman.”
The opportunity to manage a club where he once played could appeal to Van Nistelrooy, who spent two seasons with Hamburg from 2009 to 2011. The move would allow him to reunite with a fanbase that holds him in high regard and take on the challenge of steering the team back to the Bundesliga.
Leicester City’s pursuit of Van Nistelrooy highlights their ambition to bring in a manager who combines tactical acumen with the ability to inspire players. As they seek to rebound from a turbulent period, the Foxes see the Dutchman as a potential catalyst for their resurgence.
Van Nistelrooy’s credentials have been steadily growing since transitioning into management. His impressive record in previous roles, coupled with his status as a footballing icon, makes him a strong candidate for both Leicester City and Hamburg.
Whether he opts for a return to English football or a reunion with Hamburg, Van Nistelrooy’s next move will be closely watched by fans and pundits alike. Both roles present unique opportunities: Leicester offers the allure of managing in one of the world’s most competitive leagues, while Hamburg presents the chance to guide a storied club back to its former glory.
For now, the Dutchman remains at the center of intense speculation. As Leicester and Hamburg continue their managerial searches, Van Nistelrooy’s decision could shape the trajectory of both clubs in the coming seasons.
