Ruben Amorim responds to Maxi Araujo after international pause…

After being a regular starter for the Uruguay national team, Maxi Araújo expressed some frustration over not getting as much playing time at Sporting as he would like. This topic came up during a conversation, and Sporting’s coach, Rúben Amorim, offered an explanation for the situation.

Amorim acknowledged that Maxi hasn’t had many minutes on the field but pointed out that the player hasn’t had many training sessions with the team either. “I can probably count on one hand the number of training sessions he’s had,” said Amorim. He also mentioned that Maxi has been filling in different roles, especially after Marcus Edwards got injured, which has impacted his consistency in games.

Amorim emphasized that context plays a huge part in these decisions, both in training and during matches. “You just have to watch him handle the ball or see how he moves to understand that he has a lot of quality. He’s a starter for a very strong national team,” Amorim explained. However, he pointed out that adapting to Sporting is a different challenge—new league, new environment, and different dynamics.

Despite these challenges, Amorim reassured that it’s not a negative situation. “Whether it’s Nuno [Santos], Maxi, or Geny [Catamo] playing, it’s a good problem to have,” he said. With the packed schedule of games leading up to the break, Amorim is confident that everyone will get their chances to play and prove themselves.
