Ruben Amorim’s managerial debut at Manchester United began with a mixed bag of emotions as his side settled for a 1-1 draw against Ipswich Town at Portman Road.
Despite an explosive start with Marcus Rashford scoring in just the second minute, United couldn’t hold onto their lead, as Omari Hutchinson’s stunning equalizer before halftime forced the Red Devils to share the spoils.
The result nudged United up to 12th in the Premier League standings, but Amorim’s post-match analysis was less about the points gained and more about the challenges of adapting to his new 3-4-3 system. The Portuguese tactician, brought in to replace Erik ten Hag, only had a brief period to instill his philosophy, and the growing pains were evident.
Speaking after the match, Amorim highlighted the performances of three key players—Bruno Fernandes, Alejandro Garnacho, and Joshua Zirkzee—providing an honest and detailed assessment of their contributions.
Bruno Fernandes: Creative, but Needs Balance
Captain Bruno Fernandes found himself operating in multiple roles during the match, starting in the front three before dropping deeper into midfield. Amorim praised Fernandes’ versatility but didn’t hold back from pointing out areas for improvement.
“Bruno improved his game by playing nearer the ball,” said Amorim. “He feels the ball and gives us the long pass when needed. But you can’t leave him there all the time because he always looks for the long ball. We need to balance that.”
Fernandes showcased his trademark creativity but will need to adapt to Amorim’s preference for a more controlled build-up, a process that the manager admits will take time.

Alejandro Garnacho: The Bright Spark
Alejandro Garnacho once again underlined why he is one of the most exciting young talents at United. The 20-year-old was a constant threat throughout the second half, displaying his ability to hold the ball between the lines and exploit spaces.
“Garnacho surprised me,” Amorim revealed. “You start discovering things like how he can hold the ball between the lines. It’s something you don’t immediately see when watching games because he’s often playing wide.”
Garnacho, United’s top scorer this season with three Premier League goals, was unlucky not to add to his tally, as Ipswich’s defense managed to block his efforts in crucial moments. His performance, however, offered a glimpse of his potential to thrive in Amorim’s system.
Joshua Zirkzee: Struggling to Find His Footing
Summer signing Joshua Zirkzee, who arrived with high expectations after a £36.5m move from Bologna, has yet to find his rhythm at Old Trafford. Brought on as a substitute with just over 20 minutes left, the Dutchman struggled with his decision-making and failed to make an impact in the final third.
Amorim didn’t shy away from addressing his concerns about the 23-year-old forward. “At this level, decision-making is crucial,” he said. “You need to know when to keep the ball and when to push forward. Josh has to understand that in the final minutes, as we’re around the box, he needs to position himself to capitalize on crosses.”
The manager also noted that while the 3-4-3 formation isn’t the issue, the understanding of its nuances among players like Zirkzee requires significant improvement.
A Promising Start, but Challenges Remain
While the draw was not the ideal result, Amorim expressed optimism about the team’s willingness to embrace his vision. “We will need time to address these areas and improve understanding,” he emphasized.
United’s faithful will hope Amorim’s candid approach and tactical clarity can bring stability to a season that has been anything but consistent. With Garnacho’s brilliance, Fernandes’ leadership, and a clearer path for Zirkzee to improve, there are reasons for cautious optimism.
As Manchester United moves forward under their new manager, the road ahead will undoubtedly demand patience, but Ruben Amorim has already made one thing clear: no detail will go unnoticed in his quest to steer the Red Devils back to glory.
