Journalist Alex Crook has sounded an alarm for Manchester United, suggesting that Ruben Amorim, the new head coach, could soon determine that Marcus Rashford lacks the necessary qualities to excel in his system.
Rashford, who emerged from United’s academy to become one of their most influential players, holds immense value to the club, both for his talent and his symbolic homegrown status. However, Amorim’s tactical preferences could pose challenges for Rashford’s place in the squad.
Under Erik ten Hag, Rashford had a solid role and relationship, but Amorim’s preferred 3-4-3 formation may not play to Rashford’s strengths. Crook noted that Amorim’s approach relies more on players positioned behind a central striker rather than out-and-out wingers, which is where Rashford typically thrives. This potential mismatch in playing style could prove problematic, especially considering Rashford’s position as one of United’s highest earners.
“I’m not convinced where he fits in under Ruben Amorim, because we know he wants to play this 3-4-3 formation, that’s more of a two in behind a central striker, rather than with out-and-out wingers, as Rashford clearly prefers to play,” Crook shared on talkSPORT. He added that if Amorim realizes Rashford’s limitations in this setup, United could be left with a highly paid player not suited to the system.

Concerns over Rashford’s fit are shared by other football figures. Paul Scholes has expressed doubts about Rashford’s willingness to engage in the defensive work that Amorim may demand. “Does he want wingers who are going to run back? If he wants that, I’m not sure Rashford and Garnacho are right for that,” Scholes commented. Teddy Sheringham has also voiced his thoughts, suggesting Rashford needs to recognize his position of privilege and perform accordingly. “The arrival of Ruben Amorim could help Marcus Rashford get back to his very best because the writing will be on the wall if his form continues,” Sheringham warned.
Despite these concerns, there is mutual optimism from Rashford and Amorim about their partnership. Sources indicate that both believe their relationship could foster a return to peak performance for the forward.
Manchester United Transfer Updates:
United’s transfer rumors continue to buzz, with significant attention on Sporting CP forward Viktor Gyokeres. While Amorim has promised not to pursue Gyokeres during the January window, noted journalist Fabrizio Romano has hinted that a summer move is possible, citing behind-the-scenes work at United to facilitate a transfer.
However, United could face competition for Gyokeres’ teammate, Ousmane Diomande. Although Amorim has shown interest in signing Diomande, Arsenal have also been scouting the defender and have reportedly made an initial approach, signaling a potential bidding war.
In another development, Ruud van Nistelrooy has expressed his ambition to one day manage Manchester United, although he currently plans to continue in his assistant coaching role.
Amid these shifts and strategies, Amorim’s tenure could see changes in key player roles, and Rashford’s future will be a major focal point as the new system takes shape at Old Trafford.
