The Las Vegas Raiders are making some big midseason changes to their coaching lineup, and it includes a familiar face: longtime NFL coach Norv Turner.
The team announced on Tuesday that Turner, who once served as the Raiders’ head coach, will be stepping in as a senior advisor.
This move isn’t the only shakeup, though. Turner’s son, Scott, is being promoted from pass game coordinator to interim offensive coordinator. Meanwhile, Joe Philbin will take on the role of interim offensive line coach.
These changes come after the Raiders let go of offensive coordinator Luke Getsy, quarterbacks coach Rich Scangarello, and offensive line coach James Cregg following their tough loss to the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday.
Norv Turner brings a wealth of experience to the Raiders, including his history as a two-time Super Bowl-winning coordinator with the Dallas Cowboys. Back in 2004-05, Turner coached the Raiders under the team’s late owner, Al Davis, finishing with a 9-23 record. Across 15 seasons as an NFL head coach with Washington, Oakland, and San Diego, he accumulated a 114-122-1 record.

Widely respected for his offensive expertise, Turner is expected to bring fresh insight to the Raiders’ play-calling and help steady the team following these recent staffing changes. Head Coach Antonio Pierce seems to value Turner’s experience in stabilizing and refining offensive strategy during the season.
Turner, now 72, hasn’t been in the NFL since working with the Carolina Panthers in 2019 as a special assistant to their head coach, following a stint as offensive coordinator for the team.
His son Scott, now interim offensive coordinator, is likely to add his own perspective to the team’s offense, working closely with his father and bringing fresh ideas as the Raiders adjust midseason.
Joe Philbin’s new role with the offensive line also comes with high hopes, as he brings his own set of NFL experiences to help elevate the Raiders’ line performance in the coming weeks.
With these changes, the Raiders are aiming for a turnaround, and fans are hoping to see the new coaching structure bring a spark back to the team’s offense as they continue the season.
