Newcastle United entered this season with high hopes, particularly after missing out on European football, which many thought would allow them to focus entirely on a top-four push.
However, things haven’t gone according to plan. The Magpies are winless in their last four Premier League matches, leaving them sitting in 12th place. Manager Eddie Howe has been vocal about the need for his team to find their edge again, urging them to “get it over the line” as they aim for a crucial three points against Leicester City this weekend.
Despite their struggles, Newcastle have delivered memorable performances at St James’ Park against the league’s heavyweights. They’ve claimed a victory over Arsenal and secured draws with Liverpool and Manchester City. However, inconsistency has been their Achilles’ heel, with disappointing home defeats to Brighton and West Ham casting doubt on their ability to maintain momentum. That said, they’ll take encouragement from their recent head-to-head record against Leicester on home soil, having avoided defeat in their last three encounters.
Leicester City, meanwhile, appear to have turned a corner under new manager Ruud van Nistelrooy, who replaced Steve Cooper in the dugout. The Foxes have shown resilience since the Dutchman’s arrival, earning a win and a draw in his first two matches. Fans are optimistic that this managerial shift will continue to inspire the squad, especially after their dramatic comeback last weekend, when they salvaged a 2-2 draw against Brighton despite trailing 2-0 late in the game.
On the road, however, Leicester’s form remains a concern. They’ve managed just one league win away from home this season and conceded three or more goals in each of their last two away matches. St James’ Park might provide a psychological boost, though, as Leicester haven’t conceded three goals in a single match there since February 2004. Van Nistelrooy himself is no stranger to performing on this ground, having found the net in all five of his visits during his playing days with Manchester United.
Newcastle will be hoping for inspiration from Alexander Isak, who has been a bright spark in recent games. The Swedish forward has contributed three goal involvements in their last two matches, including opening the scoring on both occasions. For Leicester, the return of Patson Daka from injury has added much-needed firepower. The Zambian striker recently scored against West Ham and also netted memorably in a dominant 4-0 win over Newcastle back in December 2021.
History also favors the hosts when it comes to facing promoted sides. Newcastle have lost just one of their last 21 Premier League games against newly-promoted teams, a run that includes 12 wins. It’s a statistic that will give Howe’s men confidence as they look to rediscover the form that made them one of last season’s most exciting teams.
With Newcastle desperate to halt their slide and Leicester buoyed by fresh leadership, this clash promises to be an intriguing battle of determination versus reinvention. Both sides have plenty to play for, and Saturday’s result could prove pivotal for their respective campaigns.
