Alejandro Garnacho’s potential move from Manchester United to Napoli fell through due to significant differences in wage expectations.
Napoli’s Sporting Director Giovanni Manna revealed that although the Serie A side showed strong interest in the young winger and engaged in talks with United, they ultimately could not reach an agreement. Despite United being open to selling Garnacho for the right price, the deal did not materialize because the player’s salary demands were too high for Napoli’s wage structure.
Garnacho, who had also attracted interest from Chelsea, remained at Old Trafford after failing to secure a move. Manna disclosed that Napoli came close to meeting United’s demands but found that Garnacho’s financial expectations were incompatible with the club’s internal wage policies. Manna explained that while Garnacho was an exciting prospect for the club, the decision not to proceed was made with respect to Napoli’s squad dynamics and wage fairness.
Napoli had been looking to strengthen their attacking options after selling Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, and Garnacho was a key target. However, after submitting an initial offer, Napoli refrained from making a second bid, as the disparity in salary expectations became clear. Manna stressed that the club always aims to operate within a balanced financial framework, which meant they could not meet the wage demands that Garnacho had set.

Before Kvaratskhelia’s departure, Napoli had also been in discussions with Borussia Dortmund’s Karim Adeyemi, further highlighting their intention to bring in a talented winger. However, the club made it clear that they would not inflate their offers or overextend financially for players whose wage expectations were unrealistic for their current squad.
Reflecting on the failed move for Garnacho, Manna emphasized that Napoli worked with clear targets and made serious attempts to bring in players like Garnacho and Adeyemi. Despite the disappointment, Manna remained focused on the club’s philosophy of pursuing talent that fits within their financial structure and playing style, without creating unrealistic expectations.
For Manchester United, Garnacho’s stay was ultimately a positive development. United’s coach, Ruben Amorim, has praised the player’s growth since being dropped from the squad against Manchester City in December. Amorim noted that Garnacho’s attitude and understanding of his role within the team have significantly improved, and the connection with his teammates, especially Diogo Dalot, has become more effective. Amorim remains confident that Garnacho will continue to develop and contribute to the team in the months ahead.
