Head coach Ruben Amorim may finally be seeing his influence take hold at Manchester United, with the team stringing together three consecutive victories for the first time this season.
This impressive run includes back-to-back clean sheets, the latest coming in Bucharest as the Red Devils secured their place in the last 16 of the UEFA Europa League with a 2-0 win over FCSB. However, the quick turnaround from that European fixture could pose a challenge ahead of Sunday’s clash with Crystal Palace.
Amorim may need to rotate his squad as he aims to claim consecutive Premier League victories for the first time since taking charge. Old Trafford has not provided the kind of fortress he would have hoped for, with United suffering defeats in four of their last five home league games. Recent meetings against Crystal Palace also offer little encouragement, as United have failed to find the net in the last three league encounters between the sides. The last time they went scoreless in four consecutive matches against a single opponent was in 1983.
Crystal Palace have quietly developed into one of the Premier League’s strongest sides away from home, with no team picking up more points on their travels since the start of December. The Eagles have claimed victory in four of their last five away fixtures, keeping clean sheets in three of those games, and now have their sights set on securing three successive away wins for the first time since May 2019.
Relegation worries are becoming a distant memory for Oliver Glasner’s side, and they now have an opportunity to leapfrog their hosts in the standings with a victory. The once-daunting prospect of playing at Old Trafford no longer carries the same fear factor for Palace, who have won three of their last five visits to United. That recent success is particularly remarkable given they had only managed one victory in their previous 22 trips to face United from 1922 to 2018.
Kobbie Mainoo was a standout performer for United in their Europa League triumph over FCSB, excelling in a more advanced role and becoming the first player since Wayne Rooney in 2004 to both score and assist on his first major European start for the club. His creativity and composure could be key as United look to break down a well-drilled Palace defense.
For the visitors, new signing Romain Esse made an instant impact, scoring just two minutes after coming off the bench on his Premier League debut against Brentford. The young forward will now look to join an elite group of teenagers who have scored in their first two Premier League appearances, a feat previously achieved only by players who either represented or later moved to United.
Manchester United’s struggles in the early stages of games remain a concern, as they have failed to score before half-time in 17 of their 23 league matches this season, the highest tally in the division. If Palace can capitalize on that slow start, they may well fancy their chances of another successful outing at Old Trafford.
With both sides chasing vital points for different reasons, this promises to be an intriguing encounter. United are looking to build on their recent momentum under Amorim, while Palace are aiming to continue their impressive away form and climb further up the table. Given the history between these teams in recent years, another closely contested battle could be on the cards.
