Manchester United have a £16.7m buy-back clause for Benfica left-back Álvaro Carreras as the Benfica defender is passing a great time with the Portuguese club.
He is under the radar of Real Madrid and Liverpool reports Record Portugal and this time United cannot let this chance slip out of their hands. Technically a buy back clause is an obligation for the current club Benfica to sell the player for the amount agreed back to Manchester United. Benfica bought the player from Manchester United this summer for £6 million and they have included a buy back clause.
The player is doing great in Liga Portugal, playing seven matches in the starting eleven. So the Spaniard is a key player for Bruno Lage’s starting eleven. Furthermore he can guarantee speed and stamina as Liga Portugal is entering an interesting phase with Sporting Lisbon as leaders. Benfica need a full group this season to do well in all competitions.
Carreras probably won’t leave in January. But in the summer the calculations are different. Real Madrid want the defender as a good alternative in the left, having in mind that the player is a product of their academy, before joining United U23 a couple seasons ago, back in 2020. The player has made his debut with Spain U21 and he is waiting for an invitation to the big team.
His performances with Benfica in the UEFA Champions League have also attracted the attention of the Reds. They want Carreras after insisting on Milos Kerkez to replace Tsimikas and Roberson in the left wing.
But United is one step ahead in this race allowing them to buy back the player and setting the conditions for a possible return in Old Trafford. Nothing is confirmed yet, but the possibility that the player returns in England is very high.

Man Utd Current Situation
They are playing with Diogo Dalot on the left, who is a right defender. Furthermore, Luke Shaw’s calf injury makes the club insist on a top left back and they are currently searching for one. As it stands Carreras is a great defender, but United will consider him under special conditions. These conditions include the need for a left back after all other options are consumed.
So United are searching in the Premier League and in Spain and this seems to be the club trajectory for the moment. With the coach uncertainty and the future of ten Hag in doubt, they need good options for that position.
One big example of these movements is Daniel Carvajal who was sold to Bayer Leverkusen and brought back to Madrid after one season activating the release clause. United has all the examples they need to make this transfer happen for all the good reasons. But first they need to fix some balances in the club in order to make this transfer a reality.
United has a golden chance to get the player with a reasonable price as the price that Benfica has put is fixed at £41.5 million. That is a good deal for Manchester United, which can leave the competition of Real Madrid and Liverpool behind.
Benfica Role
This is a difficult situation for Benfica who would desire that Man Utd cannot activate the release clause that expires in 2026. They want to keep the defender on the squad for another season as he is mightily important for the tactics of Bruno Lage. The left-back can play as a left midfielder and this is one of the characteristics that Benfica wants to have in the team.
Will he stay or not, this is up to the players’ desire and how much he is dedicated to the club. Ginés Carvajal the company that holds the rights of the player want him to stay and this is a major blow to the Benfica supporters, who want him in the team. Time will tell the truth as Alvaro Carreras is one of the promising left-backs in Europe.
