Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s ambitious vision for a state-of-the-art “Wembley of the North” for Manchester United has encountered a major roadblock.
Hopes of government support for the new Old Trafford project appear to be fading fast, casting serious doubt over whether the redevelopment can proceed as planned. The INEOS-backed project, which could see either a fully upgraded Old Trafford or an entirely new 100,000-seat stadium built, was initially expected to receive backing from the government. However, football finance expert Stefan Borson has poured cold water on those expectations, claiming there is little to no chance of public funding contributing to the venture. Borson pointed out that government figures have been evasive on the matter, particularly Rachel Reeves, who failed to clarify what contribution—if any—would be made toward the stadium. Instead, she deflected responsibility onto Manchester’s Mayor, Andy Burnham, leaving United’s ownership with more questions than answers. If the government remains non-committal, the club may have to shoulder the full financial burden, potentially delaying or even derailing the entire project.
