Leverkusen CEO about Wirtz departure: Nothing is sure in Football.

Bayer Leverkusen’s CEO, Fernando Carro, made it clear: he has no intention of transferring rising star Florian Wirtz to a fellow Bundesliga club.

“It’s obvious—we don’t want to strengthen our direct competitors in the league with our top players,” Carro stated on the Phrasenmäher podcast. This message will likely catch Bayern Munich’s attention. Carro also mentioned that he told defender Jonathan Tah something similar: “I understand if you want to leave, but I would have preferred you to go to any club outside of Germany.”

However, Carro did acknowledge the unpredictable nature of football: “You can’t promise anything in this sport,” he said when asked if he could guarantee that Wirtz wouldn’t be joining Bayern. He did add that if Wirtz were to leave, he could very well become the most expensive German transfer in history, though he emphasized, “We’d be thrilled if he stayed with us forever.” Wirtz is currently under contract with Leverkusen until 2027, which gives the club a solid footing for now.

Unfortunately, Wirtz is currently facing an injury concern following Germany’s 1-0 win over the Netherlands in Nations League action. National team coach Julian Nagelsmann raised some eyebrows when he substituted Wirtz, an attacking player, for a defensive midfielder, Robert Andrich, who also plays for Leverkusen. Nagelsmann later explained that Wirtz had picked up a potentially troubling injury after slipping awkwardly on the Allianz Arena turf—a scenario that could happen anywhere, but it’s an all-too-common story in football.

At this point, Wirtz’s future remains bright but uncertain. He’s got many options, but first, he needs to navigate through this challenging injury situation.
