The Seattle Seahawks continue to make waves in the 2024 NFL season, steadily building a case as a legitimate contender in the NFC.
Their 26-21 victory over the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium showcased a well-rounded performance, but it was defensive end Leonard Williams who stole the spotlight. Head coach Mike Macdonald didn’t hold back in his praise for the veteran lineman, highlighting his exceptional play and even suggesting a Player of the Week nomination.
“I don’t know how this works, but if we can nominate Leonard Williams for Player of the Week, he’s just playing at an all-time elite level,” Macdonald said, per the Seahawks’ official website. Williams’ standout performance included a remarkable 92-yard interception return for a touchdown, a play that underscored his athleticism and impact on the game.
Williams’ Pick-Six Shifts Momentum
The defining moment came when Williams capitalized on a tipped pass by teammate Devon Witherspoon. With Aaron Rodgers looking to lead the Jets back into the game, Williams read the play perfectly. “I rush the guard, and as soon as I get hands on him, he thinks I’m coming. Then at the last second, I pop out, and the ball just happened to be in arm’s reach,” Williams explained.
After tipping the ball, Williams found himself in a rare position for a defensive lineman — sprinting downfield with the football. “I pretty much stuck my arm out, poked it out, and I got a lucky bounce. It went straight up in the air, and it gave me time to catch it,” he added.
A Defensive Lineman’s Sprint to Glory
What followed was a display of speed that had the entire Seahawks sideline buzzing. Williams hit a top speed of 17.8 miles per hour during his 92-yard dash, the fastest recorded speed by a defensive lineman since 2022, according to NFL analytics expert Seth Walder.
“I didn’t expect to get that far with it, to be honest,” Williams admitted. “I remember running with it, and I thought I was moving fast, but you never know in the moment. All my teammates were hyping me up, saying I was moving on the sideline.”

Teamwork Fuels Williams’ Big Play
As Williams crossed the 50-yard line, he briefly considered lateraling the ball but ultimately trusted his instincts to finish the play. “I looked to my left and right, and once I crossed the 50, I was actually looking to pitch it to somebody,” he said. “But I saw Spoon and the whole defense, the whole cavalry, pretty much running down the field. They were almost more excited for me to get that touchdown than I was. That was awesome.”
The touchdown not only electrified the Seahawks’ sideline but also shifted momentum firmly in Seattle’s favor. Williams’ ability to turn defense into offense exemplified the team’s opportunistic approach under Macdonald’s leadership.
Seahawks Lead NFC West with 7-5 Record
With the victory, the Seahawks improved to 7-5, taking sole possession of the NFC West lead. The win further cements their status as a team to watch as they push for a playoff spot. Macdonald emphasized the importance of consistency and praised his defense for stepping up in critical moments.
“Leonard’s play was huge for us, but it was a total team effort,” Macdonald said. “Our defense is making plays when we need them the most, and that’s the kind of football we need down the stretch.”
Williams’ Role in Seattle’s Playoff Push
As the Seahawks prepare for a crucial stretch of games, Williams’ role on the defensive line becomes even more critical. His ability to disrupt opposing offenses and create turnovers will be essential as Seattle faces divisional rivals and other playoff contenders.
Next up for the Seahawks is a divisional clash with the Arizona Cardinals, a game that could further solidify their lead in the NFC West. With Williams playing at an elite level and the team gaining confidence, Seattle is positioning itself as a formidable force heading into the postseason.
Key Matchups Ahead for Seattle
Following their game against the Cardinals, the Seahawks will face the Green Bay Packers, Minnesota Vikings, Chicago Bears, and Los Angeles Rams to close out the regular season. Each game presents unique challenges, but the Seahawks’ defense, led by Williams and a rejuvenated defensive front, will be key to their success.
The Seahawks’ path to the playoffs is far from easy, but with Macdonald’s guidance and Williams’ standout performances, they have the tools to make a deep postseason run. As Williams continues to deliver game-changing plays, Seattle’s Super Bowl aspirations are becoming more realistic with each passing week.
In a season where contenders are jockeying for position, the Seahawks are quietly making their mark. And if Leonard Williams keeps playing at this level, they won’t be under the radar for much longer.
