Saturday’s encounter between Leicester and Southampton delivers a last opportunity for both relegated sides to reclaim a fragment of pride before season’s end.
Originally, last June the Premier League fixture list promised a relegation scrap when this clash landed in May. Leicester and Southampton sealed relegation weeks ago, so the match holds no real danger. Leicester sit on half as many points as West Ham in 17th place.
Boss Ruud van Nistelrooy will vacate his role at season’s end, so Leicester aim to salvage a measure of pride. Furthermore, they lost nine consecutive home league games without finding the net. Moreover, they conceded 22 goals in that span. They could become only the second team in English league history to fail to score in ten straight home matches.
Conversely, Southampton offer a bleak defensive record this term, having shipped a league-high 80 goals. Their season has been so poor that they sit seven points adrift of Leicester in last place. They still need one point from four matches to avoid matching Derby’s lowest-ever Premier League haul.
Interestingly, their points per game have improved under caretaker boss Simon Rusk. He has overseen 0.5 points per match, up from 0.31 under Russell Martin and 0.29 under Ivan Jurić. Nevertheless, they remain winless in their last ten league outings, managing two draws and suffering eight defeats.
Although their last victory arrived with a 2-1 win away to Ipswich, that moment offers scant comfort. Additionally, that result represented their solitary success against another promoted side this season, further highlighting their struggles since then.
Notably, up front Jordan Ayew stands out for Leicester. He netted a dramatic 98th-minute winner in the reverse fixture. Yet none of his three goals since secured victory, as they drew one and lost two matches.
Meanwhile, Cameron Archer has lit the way for Southampton’s attack. He has either opened or closed the scoring in each of his last seven club goal contributions. However, the last three of those efforts ended in defeat, including the reverse fixture.
Remarkably, Southampton have faced 605 shots and 234 shots on target this season. Both figures lead the Premier League.
