Justin Herbert’s impressive evolution continues under head coach Jim Harbaugh.
Known for his powerful arm, Herbert isn’t racking up staggering numbers but is making the gritty, game-winning plays that are becoming his hallmark, a shift from what Los Angeles Chargers fans are used to seeing.
In Sunday’s 27-17 win over the Tennessee Titans, Herbert completed 14 of 18 passes for 164 yards and a touchdown, earning a 123.1 passer rating. He also extended his streak of games without an interception to seven—the longest active streak in the NFL and the longest by a Chargers quarterback in a single season.
Herbert’s stats only hint at his impact, with daring throws into tight windows and keeping plays alive with quick thinking. This week, he relied on his legs, dodging defenders and scoring a first-half touchdown that set the tone for the Chargers.

“I’m changing his name to ‘Beast.’ Beast Herbert,” praised coach Harbaugh after the game. “Half man, half beast.”
Herbert explained his approach: “It’s a big part of our offense. If coverage is tight and pressure builds, you have to break out and make something happen.” Herbert’s versatility is paying off—he’s achieved a passer rating above 90 in all nine games this season, the longest streak to start a season by any QB since Philip Rivers in 2018. The only other quarterbacks to start a season with a 90-plus rating in each of their first nine games since 1970 are Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, and Aaron Rodgers—all MVPs.
Though Herbert isn’t stacking MVP-style numbers, his value to the team is undeniable, especially after an early-season ankle injury that’s now behind him. His steady command of the offense has the Chargers sitting at 6-3, in prime position for a wild-card spot.
“Man, Justin was doing things I’ve never seen,” said teammate Khalil Mack. “Seeing him put his body on the line speaks volumes. He’s a special player, and having a leader like that makes all the difference.”
