Former Warriors Champion Launches Coed Skateboard League Amid NBA Limbo

Former NBA champion Gary Payton II has founded a coed skateboard league while awaiting his next basketball opportunity.

Payton, known for his defensive skills on the court, has teamed up with Royce Campbell and Sheldon Lewis to create the Skate Board Association (SBA). The league, set to kick off next summer in Big Bear Lake, California, will feature six teams competing in a six-month, 10-game season.

Not limiting the SBA to just one location, Payton and his partners have ambitious plans to expand to other areas in the future. Each team in the league will consist of three women and three men, fostering a diverse and inclusive environment for skaters.

Already attracting top talent, the SBA has secured 18 skaters, including Olympic silver medalist Kelvin Hoefler, under nonexclusive deals. Payton, who will take on the role of director of VIP relations in addition to being a team member, is excited about the crossover between his two passions.

Reflecting on his childhood where basketball and skateboarding intertwined, Payton expressed his long-time love for skateboarding. The launch of the SBA allows him to combine his childhood aspirations with his present-day endeavors, creating a unique opportunity for skaters of all backgrounds to showcase their talents.

The innovative approach of merging basketball and skateboarding through the SBA reflects Payton’s creativity and dedication to both sports. As the league prepares for its inaugural season, anticipation is high for the exciting competitions and camaraderie that will unfold on the skateboard ramps.
