Everton will bid farewell to Goodison Park’s traditional three o’clock kickoff ritual this weekend before their long-awaited move to the new waterfront stadium.
Understandably, excitement and longing will colour the build-up. Supporters have endured five home matches without tasting victory, recording four draws and suffering a single defeat.
Nevertheless, that sequence included impressive stalemates against champions Liverpool and second-placed Arsenal, yet a victory over relegated Ipswich remains the priority. A win here would also complete the league double for Everton against these opponents for the first time since 1994–95, following their 2-0 success in October’s encounter.
Meanwhile, Ipswich’s defeat at Newcastle last week sealed their relegation. They arrive looking to snap a four-match winless streak that comprises one draw and three defeats. Their defence has been porous, conceding eleven goals in that period. They have also failed to score in the last two outings.
Despite those struggles, Ipswich’s record at Goodison Park remains positive, with victories in September 2000 and February 2002. Manager Kieran McKenna’s team have also collected fourteen of twenty-one league points on the road this term. That success includes four points from their last three away fixtures.
On the attacking front, Iliman Ndiaye has led Everton with seven league goals this season. He will seek to extend his seven-goal tally after scoring against Arsenal at Goodison Park and in the earlier meeting. Ipswich’s standout performer, Liam Delap, has scored twelve league goals, although he also leads the division in fouls with sixty-five.
Interestingly, only Leicester City have failed to score in more Premier League games than Everton this season. Everton have gone fifteen matches without finding the net, while Leicester City did so in sixteen games.
As ever, Manager Unai Emery will urge his players to lift spirits for this landmark afternoon. He will encourage them to savour Goodison Park’s atmosphere one final time at three o’clock.
Conversely, Ipswich boss Kieran McKenna will aim to instil pride and resilience despite relegation. He will seek a fitting way to end their Premier League campaign.
