Elon Musk’s Liverpool Links: Could the Billionaire Tech Tycoon Add the Reds to His Empire?

Elon Musk, the billionaire entrepreneur and owner of X (formerly Twitter), has sparked fresh speculation about entering the football world after his father, Errol Musk, revealed that Liverpool FC might be a potential addition to his business portfolio.

Errol Musk disclosed in an interview that his son is “interested” in purchasing the iconic Premier League leaders, raising eyebrows across the footballing and business spheres.

Speaking to Times Radio, Errol Musk confirmed his son’s admiration for the Merseyside club, tying it back to the family’s history. “He would like to, yes, obviously,” said Musk Sr. “Anybody would want to – so would I!” He further elaborated that Elon’s grandmother, Cora Amelia Robinson, was born in Liverpool before emigrating to South Africa, which has created a sentimental connection between the Musk family and the city.

“Our family has roots in Liverpool. His grandmother was born there, and we even knew some of The Beatles as they grew up with some of my relatives,” Errol added, emphasizing a deep personal attachment to the area.

Despite the revelations, Musk Sr. expressed concern over how the current owners of Liverpool, Fenway Sports Group (FSG), might react to the news. He suggested that public knowledge of Elon’s interest could lead to a price hike for the club, a move that might complicate any potential deal.

This isn’t the first time Elon Musk has been linked to football club ownership. Back in 2022, he caused a stir on social media when he tweeted a tongue-in-cheek claim about buying Manchester United. The post, stating “I’m buying Manchester United ur welcome (sic),” went viral, amassing thousands of retweets and likes. However, Musk quickly clarified that the comment was a joke, adding that if he were to buy any club, it would be Manchester United due to his childhood fandom.

Although he downplayed the idea of owning a sports team at the time, his father’s recent comments suggest that Musk might have shifted his focus to Liverpool. The club’s rich history, global fanbase, and position as one of the most successful teams in English football make it an attractive proposition for any investor.

Fenway Sports Group, led by John Henry, has owned Liverpool since 2010. Under their stewardship, the club has experienced remarkable success, including winning the Premier League and Champions League. However, rumors of FSG exploring options to sell all or part of the club have persisted, making the timing of Musk’s interest particularly intriguing.

Elon Musk’s Consistency

Adding fuel to the speculation is the Musk family’s knack for making bold, high-profile investments. From space exploration with SpaceX to revolutionizing the automotive industry with Tesla, Elon Musk has consistently shown a willingness to disrupt traditional industries. Entering the world of football could be his next venture, blending his business acumen with his personal ties to Liverpool.

Critics, however, remain skeptical about Musk’s intentions. While his father’s comments hint at genuine interest, Elon Musk himself has yet to publicly address the Liverpool rumors. Without direct confirmation, some see the story as another example of the Musk family’s ability to dominate headlines.

Still, the prospect of the world’s richest man owning a Premier League club has ignited debates among fans and pundits alike. Would Musk’s ownership bring unprecedented financial backing to Liverpool, or could his often unpredictable approach create instability? These are the questions that linger as speculation swirls.

For now, all eyes remain on Fenway Sports Group and Elon Musk. Whether the Tesla and SpaceX mogul will make a formal move for Liverpool remains to be seen, but the very idea of his involvement adds a layer of intrigue to the football world. With Musk’s ability to capture attention and disrupt industries, a potential Liverpool takeover would undoubtedly become one of the most talked-about stories in sports.
