At halftime at Anfield, a young fan’s dream of scoring a penalty was heartbreakingly crushed by former Liverpool goalkeeper David James, who pulled off two impressive saves, leaving the crowd at the Kop End in shock.
David James, who played for Liverpool from 1992 to 1999 with 214 appearances, is now part of the halftime fun at Anfield. During the break, while Liverpool and Chelsea were having their team talks, a group of fans took to the pitch for a penalty shootout against the former England goalkeeper.
Known for his record of most penalty saves in Premier League history, James seemed determined to keep adding to that tally, even when faced with an 11-year-old fan. While most goalkeepers might go easy on kids and let the ball slip through, James had no such plans. In front of the Kop, he saved the young boy’s first penalty, but the kid was given another try. Unfortunately, James saved that shot too!

After his second save, James turned to the crowd behind him, only to be met with playful boos from the fans, clearly entertained by the situation. Unbothered by the reaction, James later shared the moment on social media, saying, “So, half-time Standard Chartered penalty shootout at @LFC, the young lad has a chance to retake his penalty… Today’s signed match shirts and last week’s @LiverpoolFCW signed match shirts are live to bid for!”
Even though the young fan missed out on scoring, he likely cheered up afterward as Liverpool went on to beat Chelsea 2-1. A Mohamed Salah penalty and a cool finish from Curtis Jones secured the win, canceling out Nicolas Jackson’s equalizer. With this victory, Arne Slot’s side stays at the top of the Premier League, one point ahead of Manchester City and four points ahead of Arsenal.
