Cleveland Browns have chosen Dillon Gabriel as the backup quarterback and Shedeur Sanders as the third choice, a decision made by Coach Kevin Stefanski after finalizing the 53-man roster.
Dillon Gabriel’s standout performances in the last two preseason games have earned him the role of Joe Flacco’s backup, securing a spot on the team’s quarterback lineup. The Browns opted to stick with three quarterbacks instead of four, with Gabriel impressing Stefanski enough to land the coveted position.
Following the trade of Kenny Pickett to the Las Vegas Raiders, Gabriel’s path to the backup role became clearer. Stefanski expressed his confidence in Gabriel’s ability to fulfill the responsibilities of the backup quarterback, highlighting the tough decisions that come with shaping the team’s roster.
Gabriel’s on-field performance was a major factor in the Browns’ decision, showcasing his skills by leading the team to scoring drives in the preseason matchups. Notably, Gabriel orchestrated successful drives resulting in touchdowns or field goals on five out of seven possessions, demonstrating his efficiency under pressure.
In the preseason games against the Philadelphia Eagles and Los Angeles Rams, Gabriel displayed his composure and talent by executing two-minute drills in the first half. His overall preseason stats include completing 25 of 37 passes for 272 yards, along with recording one touchdown and one interception, solidifying his position as the backup quarterback.
Stefanski emphasized that Gabriel’s evaluation extended beyond game performance, indicating a comprehensive assessment of his capabilities and contributions to the team. The decision to appoint Gabriel as the backup quarterback reflects the Browns’ trust in his potential and readiness to step into a crucial role when needed.
