Cleveland Brown sign a new QB

The Cleveland Browns have welcomed a new backup quarterback to their roster.

According to NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero, the Browns are signing Bailey Zappe from the Kansas City Chiefs practice squad.

This move comes after Deshaun Watson’s unfortunate season-ending Achilles injury. Dorian Thompson-Robinson’s availability is also uncertain due to a finger injury that knocked him out of Sunday’s game against Cincinnati. If Thompson-Robinson isn’t ready, Jameis Winston is expected to start in Week 8 against Baltimore, with Zappe stepping in as the backup.

Zappe, a fourth-round pick in 2022, spent two seasons with the New England Patriots, starting eight games in 14 appearances. He brought some excitement to the field with his willingness to go deep, though he threw 12 interceptions alongside 11 touchdowns. With the Patriots shifting direction under Jerod Mayo, Zappe found himself the odd man out and landed on the Chiefs practice squad after being released earlier this season.

For Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski, Zappe brings a bit of reassurance—a backup with starting experience—as the team tries to turn things around in a tough season.
