Christian McCaffrey’s return energizes 49ers in narrow win over Buccaneers

Christian McCaffrey’s return didn’t bring flashy stats, but his presence helped stabilize the 49ers’ offense in their 23-20 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

“I’m just happy I’m here,” McCaffrey shared with the Associated Press. “It was a long journey and a lot of long days, so it feels good to win and to just play football again.”

After missing the season’s first eight games with Achilles and calf injuries, the reigning Offensive Player of the Year made his mark, playing 54 of 61 offensive snaps. He carried the ball 13 times for 39 yards against Tampa’s strong run defense and added six catches for 68 yards.

“I never go in expecting anything, but when my number is called, I like to be out there,” McCaffrey explained. “That was the third time I’ve had pads on in eight weeks, so just getting back into the groove… That was really good for me. I feel pretty good. I thought I’d be a lot more sore, but we’ll see how I feel tomorrow.”

Though the run game was limited, McCaffrey’s return helped open the field for Brock Purdy and the rest of the offense. The 49ers racked up 413 total yards, averaging 6.8 yards per play compared to Tampa’s 215 yards and 3.7 yards per play. Without some missed field goals and struggles in the red zone, the game wouldn’t have been as close.

Purdy was thrilled to have McCaffrey back. “I think he was awesome,” Purdy said. “We had multiple plays with him out of the backfield that were big plays throwing the ball. Defenses have to scheme for him, which can open up other guys. More than anything, seeing how gritty and tough he is—we get behind him. He inspires us, keeps us going, and lights that fire in the huddle. It’s huge having him in there.”

The win lifted the 49ers to 5-4, second in the NFC West and within reach of a playoff spot. With McCaffrey back in action, the 49ers look poised for a strong second-half push under coach Kyle Shanahan.
