Chelsea face a major crisis as doubts swirl over their goalkeeping options. Enzo Maresca and the club hierarchy warn that serious mistakes by key keepers have created a big problem.
Filip Jorgensen and Robert Sanchez now risk being replaced this summer. Their errors have drawn harsh criticism from a Sky Sports pundit and cast doubt on their long-term roles.
Since Todd Boehly’s consortium took over in May 2022, Chelsea has bolstered their goalkeeper ranks. Alongside Sanchez and Jorgensen, the club also signed Mike Penders to add depth.

Sanchez served as Maresca’s first-choice keeper for most of the season. In contrast, Jorgensen mainly found game time in cup competitions until recent developments.
Jorgensen shone in the Europa Conference League and earned a spot in the Premier League starting eleven. The 22-year-old impressed with brilliant saves and superior ball control compared to Sanchez.
However, Jorgensen made a costly error against Aston Villa. He allowed Marco Asensio’s shot to slip underneath him, handing Villa a 2-1 win and three crucial points.
Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp lambasted the blunder. He warned, “He won’t want to see that again. They’ve left themselves with a real problem because both have made mistakes.”
Looking ahead to summer, Chelsea might head back to the market for a new shot-stopper. Rumours link the club with Borussia Dortmund’s Gregor Kobel, Liverpool’s Caoimhin Kelleher, and Lille’s Lucas Chevalier. Alternatively, Chelsea could fast-track 19-year-old Mike Penders or recall Djordje Petrovic, who has already made 31 appearances. The Blues also show interest in forward Ferran Torres, with a €30million bid in play, and they now eye Rafael Leao as his price drops to £66million.
