The Los Angeles Chargers have been dealt a significant blow with the news that running back J.K. Dobbins will miss time after suffering a knee sprain in Monday night’s 30-23 loss to the Baltimore Ravens.
NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport confirmed the report, adding that while Dobbins is out for this week’s matchup against the Atlanta Falcons, his return remains uncertain moving forward.
A Resurgent Season Cut Short
Dobbins, who signed with the Chargers during the offseason following four injury-marred years with the Ravens, has been nothing short of spectacular in his first year with Los Angeles. The 25-year-old back was on track for a career-best season, already amassing 766 rushing yards and eight touchdowns on 158 carries—an impressive 4.8 yards per attempt.
The former Baltimore star has also become a valuable asset in the passing game, setting personal bests with 28 receptions for 134 yards. His dual-threat capability has been a critical component of the Chargers’ offense, providing quarterback Justin Herbert with a reliable outlet in key situations.
Dominant Before the Injury
Before exiting the game against his former team, Dobbins was once again showcasing his versatility. He racked up 40 rushing yards on six carries and added 19 receiving yards on three catches in the first half. His final touch came with just over five minutes remaining in the second quarter, at which point the Chargers held a narrow 10-7 lead.
However, the tide turned quickly in his absence. Baltimore capitalized, scoring before halftime to seize control of the game. Without their lead back, the Chargers’ offense sputtered, managing only 110 total yards in the second half, 63 of which came on a desperation drive aided by defensive penalties.

Another Setback Against Familiar Foes
The irony of Dobbins’ latest injury isn’t lost on fans or the player himself—it came against the team that drafted him. During his time in Baltimore, Dobbins endured a series of devastating injuries, including a torn ACL in 2021, another knee setback in 2022, and a ruptured Achilles in Week 1 of 2023.
Now, with the Chargers sitting at 7-4 and holding the sixth seed in the AFC playoff race, his absence creates a significant challenge for Los Angeles as they navigate a tough stretch of their schedule.
What’s Next for the Chargers?
Over the next four weeks, the Chargers face a gauntlet of opponents, including the Falcons (6-5), Chiefs (10-1), Buccaneers (5-6), and Broncos (7-5). While matchups against the struggling Patriots and Raiders later in the season offer some relief, the team will need to weather the storm without their primary offensive weapon.
Gus Edwards is expected to assume the bulk of the rushing responsibilities, with rookie Kimani Vidal stepping in as a receiving option out of the backfield. Hassan Haskins will also see an increased role in the rotation. While this trio brings depth, none possess the dynamic playmaking ability that Dobbins has showcased throughout the season.
Chargers’ Playoff Outlook
Despite the setback, the Chargers remain in a strong position to secure a playoff berth, with an 86% chance of making the postseason according to projections. However, maintaining momentum without Dobbins will be a test of their offensive adaptability and Herbert’s ability to shoulder a greater load.
A Hopeful Return
For Dobbins, the focus now shifts to recovery and a potential return during the Chargers’ playoff push. Assuming the team can stay on course, his presence in January could provide the spark needed for a deep postseason run.
While injuries have been an unfortunate theme throughout his career, Dobbins has consistently demonstrated resilience. Chargers fans will hope that this latest setback is just a temporary detour in what has been a remarkable comeback campaign.
As the season enters its critical stages, the spotlight is on Los Angeles to prove they can rise above adversity and keep their championship aspirations alive.
