Carlos Alcaraz as Wimbledon Champion: “It is like a dream come true”

Carlos Alcaraz was extremely happy after the victory with the young boy from Villena that made history. Winning a Wimbledon title reversed the recent story of this sport.

Alcaraz defeated Djokovic 3-2 in sets winning 7-6, 8-6 on a tiebreak in the second set, 6-1 in the third, and 6-4 in the fifth. The Spaniard becomes in that way one of the youngest tennis players to win this Grand Slam, after names like Michael Lang and Boris Becker.

Alcaraz has broken some records in the last season becoming the first men’s tennis player to be ranked in the first position at the age of 19 years and 130 days.

Today he achieved his first Grand Slam to enter history as the player that brought a 21-year-old hegemony to an end. Alcaraz won after two decades of domination of Nadal, Murray, Federer, and Djokovic on the grass court.

Alcaraz said after the match in the press conference after the game that this was like a dream come true and we really desired to be a Wimbledon Champion.

Winning Wimbledon

“Honestly I didn’t expect to get it really soon. It is time to enjoy and to see everything, all my feelings, and as I said it is a dream.”

“Well, I did it for myself not for the 10th generation, honestly, but you know it was great, pretty Novak at his best. In this stage, you know making history, being the guy to beat him after 10 years. I’m beating on that court, it is amazing for me.”

“Something that I will never forget, that’s for sure. But I said it is great I think for the new generations as well to see me beating him. And making them think that they are capable of doing it as well. So it is great for me and for the young players as well.”

What Changed after the first set…

“Well it was tough first set I don’t know honestly, but you know I felt that he was playing well. He was playing at a good level. I had chances to break his serve or I was close to breaking his serve. I couldn’t take it. That’s a problem when you don’t take the opportunities against a legend like Novak. You have to struggle with it.”

“But in the second set, I knew that I was going to have chances. I had to be focused. I had to stay there and wait for my chance to be up or to be close to the score. And you know after winning the second set it was really good for me. Because if I would have lost that set, probably I could not win the trophy. Probably could have lost in three sets and strike sets. And I would say that gave me a lot of confidence, a lot of motivation to still go in, to think that I’m able to win Novak in that stage.”

The crumps of the last match

“I’m a totally different player from the French Open. I grew up a lot since that moment. I learned a lot from that moment. You know, as I said before the final, I took a lesson from that match. I did some different before the match. I prepared a little bit differently mentally before the match and I could deal with the pressure, the nerves better than I did in French Open.”

“Obviously, on grass is different than on clay, but you know really happy to be able to stay there, didn’t get down, didn’t give up and I saw until the last ball. Every ball I think we made great rallies, great points. And it was a long match, long sets and I think it was the mental part that allowed me to stay there during the five sets.”

The biggest moment in my life

“Right now it is the happiest moment of my life, that’s for sure. Probably in five years a good change. But right now, I’m twenty. I didn’t lift too many situations like this so I’m gonna enjoy this moment. But, making history that I did today, yeah it is the happiest moment in my life and I think it is not gonna change for a long time.”

“Beating Novak, and winning Wimbledon Championship is something that I dream about since I started to play tennis. That’s why it is the biggest moment of my life.”

Party after winning the Wimbledon

“Well, I have the official dinner like every year and then I don’t know. I will spend time with my family, that’s for sure, but I don’t know where.”

Best qualities of Carlos as a tennis player

“Well, it is crazy Novak says that (Novak previously said that Alcaraz has the strength of him, Rafa Nadal, and Roger Federer) honestly, but I consider myself a really complete player. I think I have the thoughts, I have the strength physically and mentally to endure these situations. I don’t know. Probably he is right, but I don’t want to think about it. I want to think that I’m full Carlos Alcaraz, let’s say. Probably I have some good ability from every player.”

“I probably, I’m capable of doing the things that I did today. Probably before this match, I thought that I wasn’t ready to beat Djokovic in five sets. I picked much like this. Stay good physically and good mentally for about five hours against a legend, probably I learned today about myself.”

What changed from the last final in Roland Garros

“Before this match, I thought that I can beat Novak, that’s obvious. But, after this epic match let’s say, I think differently about Novak. In the way that probably in other tournaments, other Grand Slams, I will remember this moment. And I think I’m ready to play five sets against him. Good rallies, good sets, really long, long match and stay there physically, mentally. And in tennis in general so probably change my mind a little bit after this match.”

Emotions of the family

“It is a big moment, just for me, but for my family and all the people around me and it is a really really special moment. I supplant anything thanks to my dad, he’s a really huge fan of tennis. He was watching tennis before my birth, so it’s crazy. His whole life is about tennis and I think for them watching his kid making history and lifting the trophy Wimbledon, is something incredible for them and for me to have them give a big hug. It’s something I will never forget and I hope to have a photo from that moment cause I wanna keep forever.”

Now it is time for the champion to get a rest as the final Grand Slam of the year, US Open arrives soon. The world of tennis had a risen star and will enjoy his tennis as much as possible to add new lessons and values as he shines on the court.
