Caleb Williams, the first overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, is navigating a turbulent rookie season with the Chicago Bears.
The team’s 4-8 record, coupled with the recent firing of head coach Matt Eberflus and offensive coordinator Shane Waldron, has left the young quarterback facing more challenges than he anticipated in his first year as a pro. Now, Williams is breaking his silence and offering a candid reflection on the adversity surrounding his rookie campaign.
“The human aspect of it weighs on you a little bit, especially this being my first year with the first coach that drafted me,” Williams said in an interview with marqueesportsnetwork.com, referring to Eberflus’ dismissal. “I understand the decisions even though I have no control over it. I have to roll with the punches and move forward to help this team win.”
Despite the team’s struggles, Williams has shown flashes of his potential. Through 12 games, he has thrown for 2,612 yards, 14 touchdowns, and five interceptions. However, the instability within the organization has hindered his development. Losing both a head coach and an offensive coordinator within weeks is a rare and challenging situation for any rookie quarterback.
“I wouldn’t say I’m happy about this first year,” Williams admitted. “Having these moments is definitely something that will help me in the future. Having your coach or other coaches get fired and people get promoted is something that is hard to repeat in practice. Managing all of this would help in the long run so I can grow from my first year.”
Williams’ maturity and focus on long-term growth have been evident throughout the season. He recognizes that the constant changes in leadership and playbooks are part of life in the NFL, and he’s committed to adapting. “Down the line, I’ll have different OCs or different head coaches or whatever the case may be,” Williams explained. “Being able to handle it my first year, handle a new playbook, handle all these different changes—I think it definitely will help mine and the team’s development.”

The Bears, meanwhile, are now in search of a new head coach to lead Williams and the rest of the roster. The firing of Eberflus has opened the door for several high-profile candidates, and speculation is already swirling about potential replacements. According to reports, former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick is among the top names linked to the position, as rumors suggest he may be interested in leading the Bears’ rebuild.
Another intriguing candidate reportedly on Chicago’s radar is Pete Carroll, the Super Bowl-winning coach of the Seattle Seahawks. Carroll’s experience and leadership could provide the stability and guidance that Williams and the young Bears roster need to turn things around.
Bears president Kevin Warren recently addressed the team’s coaching vacancy, expressing confidence in the attractiveness of the role. “Our head coaching job will be the most coveted in the NFL this year, and we are going to work to do better,” Warren stated. “We have a lot of salary cap space, and we also have a young and talented roster. Our quarterback, Caleb Williams, has proven that he is very special, and in the right environment, he can become even more special than he has already proven.”
The decision on the next head coach will ultimately fall to general manager Ryan Poles, who is tasked with finding a leader capable of maximizing the team’s potential. For Williams, the hope is that the next coaching staff will provide the stability and support needed to fully unlock his abilities and lead the Bears to future success.
As Williams reflects on the challenges of his rookie season, he remains optimistic about what lies ahead. “It’s been a tough year, but I know it’s going to make me stronger,” he said. “I’m focused on finishing the season strong and continuing to grow as a player and a leader.”
For the Bears, the next few months will be crucial in shaping the future of the franchise. With a talented young quarterback at the helm and a new coaching staff on the horizon, Chicago has an opportunity to reset and build a brighter future.
