Brenden Rice, son of NFL great Jerry Rice, has been waived by the Los Angeles Chargers after a disappointing rookie season.
Playing in the shadow of a Hall of Famer like his father was never going to be easy for the younger Rice. Despite his efforts, Brenden’s NFL journey hit a roadblock as the Chargers decided to part ways with him. Drafted in the seventh round in 2024, Rice’s rookie season didn’t live up to expectations, only seeing limited action in three games.
With zero catches and tackles to his name, Rice’s lack of impact on the field led to his eventual placement on injured reserve in November. Hopes were high for a better sophomore season, but the Chargers’ recent decision indicates a different direction.
Standing at 6-foot-3, showcasing a 4.50-second 40-yard dash, and a 36.5-inch vertical leap, Rice possesses the physical tools to intrigue teams looking for potential. However, his on-field performance fell short, resulting in the Chargers releasing him from the roster.
Despite being waived, there remains a possibility for Rice to secure a spot on the Chargers’ practice squad, offering him a chance to continue his development and prove his worth in the league. With determination and hard work, Brenden Rice could still carve out a successful career in the NFL, even if it means stepping out of his father’s shadow.
