Bayern Munich’s stars have faced heavy criticism from the German press after a tough 4-1 loss to Barcelona in the Champions League.
Brazilian winger Raphinha delivered a stunning hat-trick, leaving Bayern with only three points from their three matches in the competition so far. This defeat follows their recent loss to Aston Villa, though the team still holds the top spot in the Bundesliga.
German newspaper Bild didn’t hold back, with some harsh ratings for the Bayern squad. Three players received the lowest possible score of six, while six others were given a five. Even the best-rated player only managed to get a three. Raphael Guerreiro, Dayot Upamecano, and Kim Min-jae were particularly singled out. Guerreiro was described as having a “very weak day,” while Min-jae was said to be “completely out of sorts” and “shaky.” Upamecano’s struggles at the back only added to Bayern’s defensive concerns, with Bild warning that the team’s defense needs serious attention.

Other players also found themselves under the microscope. Alphonso Davies was criticized for being “defensively mediocre,” while Michael Olise, who had shined earlier in the season, was noted as currently “struggling.” Serge Gnabry was mocked for his struggles against Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal, with Bild mentioning how Yamal “repeatedly dribbled past him and even tunneled him.” Although Gnabry provided a strong cross for Bayern’s lone goal, his overall performance was considered lacking.
Leon Goretzka was Bayern’s highest-rated player with a three, while Harry Kane, Manuel Neuer, Jamal Musiala, Kingsley Coman, and Leroy Sane managed to escape with a score of four.
The defeat has put extra pressure on Bayern coach Vincent Kompany, who was given a five by Bild. They raised concerns about whether his aggressive, high-pressing style is too risky for Champions League play. With two losses in three games, doubts are starting to grow, especially with Bayern aiming for the 2025 Champions League final at their home stadium, the Allianz Arena. Bild also pointed out that top teams are finding it too easy to exploit Bayern’s high defensive line, suggesting that a backup plan, or “Plan B,” might be necessary.
Bayern will return to action on Sunday against Mainz, but all eyes are already on their next Champions League clash against Benfica, which now looks like a crucial match for their season.
