Turkey narrowly defeats Sweden 85-79 in a thrilling round of 16 game, led by Alperen Sengun’s stellar performance.
In a heart-pounding clash between Turkey and Sweden, Alperen Sengun showcased his dominance, spearheading an undefeated Turkish squad against a struggling Swedish team. Despite being heavy favorites, Turkey had to dig deep to secure a hard-fought victory over Sweden, with a final score of 85-79. Sengun put on a show once again, recording an impressive stat line of 24 points, 16 rebounds, and six assists, reaffirming his status as a standout player in the tournament. Accompanying Sengun’s stellar performance, former Cleveland Cavaliers forward Cedi Osman contributed 17 points, while ex-Celtics guard Shane Larkin chipped in with ten points of his own.
Sengun’s remarkable all-around game has been a key factor in Turkey’s success, as he currently ranks among the top three players in assists, rebounds, and efficiency throughout the tournament. Additionally, Sengun sits comfortably in sixth place in scoring, boasting an impressive average of 22 points per game. Osman has also been a significant contributor to Turkey’s campaign, averaging 15.7 points per game.
Despite emerging victorious, Turkey’s performance from the field left much to be desired, as they struggled with their shooting accuracy. The team managed a mere 29.1% shooting from beyond the arc and 39.1% from the field, highlighting an area that requires improvement moving forward. Furthermore, their woes extended to the free-throw line, where they shot a lackluster 71%, missing crucial opportunities to extend their lead.
Although Sweden displayed stronger shooting percentages across the board, they faltered in crucial moments, allowing Turkey to capitalize on second-chance opportunities. Turkey dominated the rebounding battle, outclassing Sweden by 12 boards, ultimately proving to be a decisive factor in their narrow victory.
