Golden State Warriors and Kuminga Reach Stalemate Over Contract Terms

Jonathan Kuminga and the Golden State Warriors remain locked in a tense contract standoff, with both sides refusing to budge on critical deal terms.

Negotiations between the Warriors and restricted free agent forward Jonathan Kuminga have hit a wall, despite several offers being put on the table. The team recently sweetened their proposal, but Kuminga and his camp aren’t satisfied with what’s on offer.

Last week, Golden State made headlines by offering Kuminga a three-year, $75.2 million contract. The deal features a team option for the third year, guaranteeing Kuminga $48.3 million over the first two years. This offer closely mirrors the annual salary Josh Giddey landed with the Chicago Bulls, but with one major caveat: Giddey’s contract is fully guaranteed, while Kuminga’s third year hangs in the balance.

For Kuminga, the lack of long-term security is a sticking point. His agent, Aaron Turner, continues to push for a contract with more player control. They want a player option inserted or a significant salary increase if the Warriors insist on keeping the third year as their option. The message is clear: If Golden State wants flexibility, they’ll need to pay for it.

The Warriors’ latest offer marks a notable jump from their previous package, which stood at two years and $45 million. While the bump in guaranteed money shows the team’s growing urgency, the core issues remain unresolved. Kuminga doesn’t want to enter a third year as a potential trade chip or find himself without leverage if the Warriors decide to move on.

Ownership plays a critical role in these negotiations. Warriors owner Joe Lacob has supported Kuminga since the franchise picked him over Franz Wagner in the 2021 NBA Draft. However, Lacob also knows losing Kuminga for nothing next summer would be a disastrous outcome. That’s why the team quickly dismissed any notion of a one-year, qualifying-offer deal that would let Kuminga hit the open market unrestricted in 2025.

From the Warriors’ perspective, retaining control over Kuminga’s future is non-negotiable. The front office wants to keep trade flexibility and cap management options open, especially with the roster’s salary structure already under pressure. Kuminga’s camp, in contrast, believes he’s earned the right to some control over his own destiny after his recent growth and contributions.

As the standoff drags on, tension builds in the Bay Area. Warriors fans know Kuminga’s athleticism and upside are vital to the team’s future. But the franchise remains firm, unwilling to cede ground on the structure of the deal. The next few weeks could determine whether Kuminga stays a Warrior or tests the market elsewhere.

For now, both sides remain locked in—each waiting for the other to blink. The ball’s in Golden State’s court, but Kuminga and his agent have made it clear: they won’t settle for less than what they believe he’s worth.
