Rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy faced a tough start in his debut game against the Bears, as he struggled under pressure and failed to find his rhythm.
In a showdown between two 2024 first-round draft picks, McCarthy of the Minnesota Vikings and Caleb Williams of the Chicago Bears, it was Williams who initially shone brighter. Williams managed to scramble for the game’s sole touchdown in the first half, leaving McCarthy constantly on the move to evade the Bears’ relentless pressure.
McCarthy’s passing game was lackluster, completing just 5-of-8 attempts for 48 yards, with one rush for 11 yards. His longest completion of 28 yards to wide receiver Jalen Nailor set up a 59-yard field goal for the Vikings. However, Minnesota struggled, earning only four first downs and going 0-for-5 on third down conversions in the first half.
The Vikings’ run game, which mustered a mere 35 yards, provided little relief for McCarthy, forcing him to carry much of the offensive burden in the early stages of the game. The second half did not bring respite for the rookie quarterback, as he continued to face challenges.
On Minnesota’s opening drive of the second half, McCarthy’s search for Justin Jefferson was intercepted by the Bears, compounding his woes. Despite his struggles, McCarthy’s resilience and determination were evident as he tried to rally his team in the face of adversity.
