ESPN has chosen Tim Legler to join Mike Breen and Richard Jefferson as the new No. 1 team for NBA Finals coverage, replacing Doris Burke.
Legler, a seasoned network commentator, will now take his place alongside Breen and Jefferson for the network’s highly-anticipated Finals broadcasts. The move comes as ABC/ESPN demoted Hall of Fame broadcaster Doris Burke, who had been a pivotal part of the NBA Finals team for two years.
Burke made history as the first woman to serve as an analyst for one of the four major North American sports leagues championships. She brought a wealth of experience to the role, having previously worked as an analyst for WNBA games and covered New York Knicks games. Notably, Burke was also the first female commentator to call a Knicks game on both radio and television.
During her time at Providence College from 1984 to 1987, Burke was a standout player for the women’s basketball team, showcasing her skills as a point guard. Her impressive stats included averaging 12.1 points and 5.3 assists per game, laying the foundation for her successful career in sports broadcasting.
Despite the change in the NBA Finals lineup, Burke’s contributions to the sports broadcasting world have been significant. She has been a key figure at ESPN since 1991, where she played a vital role as the primary radio and television voice of the WNBA’s New York Liberty.
Meanwhile, Legler’s promotion to the top NBA Finals team spotlights his expertise and commentary skills, ensuring fans can expect insightful analysis and engaging coverage during the championship games. Working alongside seasoned veterans like Breen and Jefferson, Legler is poised to make a lasting impact on the broadcast.
As the NBA Finals approach, the dynamic trio of Legler, Breen, and Jefferson is set to bring a fresh perspective to the coverage, offering fans a unique blend of knowledge and entertainment. With Legler now at the forefront of ESPN’s Finals team, viewers can anticipate an exciting and engaging viewing experience throughout the championship series.
