The Washington Commanders have made a bold move by trading away their lead running back, Brian Robinson Jr., and turning to a rookie sensation to fill the void.
Robinson, who has been a key player for the Commanders over the past three seasons, was dealt to the 49ers in exchange for a 2026 sixth-round pick. With Robinson out of the picture, the Commanders are looking to their third-round rookie from the 2022 NFL Draft to step up.
Although Robinson had been a reliable force in the backfield, averaging around 14 carries for nearly 57 yards per game, the Commanders felt it was time to head in a new direction. The versatile veteran Austin Ekeler is expected to take the lead in the short term, with third-year backup Chris Rodriguez offering additional support.
However, the real excitement in Washington’s backfield is centered around a rookie sensation known as Croskey-Merritt, or “Bill” as he is often called. Despite being selected late in the draft, this young player has already caught the attention of fans and analysts alike.
Croskey-Merritt’s journey to the Commanders was not without obstacles. After transferring to Arizona and playing in only one game last season due to eligibility concerns, he made a significant impact by rushing for 106 yards and a touchdown. Now, with the spotlight on him, Croskey-Merritt has the opportunity to prove his worth and make a name for himself in Washington’s backfield.
