Ipswich face a weekend that could confirm their drop into the Championship if they lose at Arsenal and West Ham and Wolves both secure victories.
They surrendered a two-goal advantage to draw 2-2 at Chelsea. However, a win there would not have altered their inevitable relegation fate.
Their relegation could be sealed this weekend if West Ham and Wolves both win. Ipswich must avoid defeat at Arsenal. Moreover, their head-to-head league run against Arsenal now spans fourteen games without a win. It includes three draws and eleven defeats. Consequently, any reprieve may depend on other teams slipping up elsewhere.
Under Kieran McKenna, they have found the net in eleven of their last twelve matches across all competitions. They could therefore end their four-game scoreless streak here. Conceding has troubled them far more, particularly after the hour mark. Only Southampton has conceded more Premier League goals after the 60th minute, with thirty-one conceded compared to Ipswich’s twenty-four.
Arsenal will head to Suffolk on cloud nine. They secured a famous 2-1 victory at the Bernabéu that booked their first UEFA Champions League semi-final spot since 2009.
Their progress in the Champions League has made the league feel like an unwanted distraction. Moreover, Arsenal have never lost an away head-to-head clash with a relegation-threatened side since 1984. If they suffer that defeat here and Liverpool win later the same day, Liverpool would clinch the title.
Mikel Arteta’s side have gone six games unbeaten on the road with three victories and three draws. It seems unlikely they will stumble here. Furthermore, they have beaten every team in the relegation zone in each of their last ten league meetings. That run produced a combined score of thirty goals to two.
Julio Enciso opened his Premier League account last weekend against Chelsea. Strikingly, three of his last four top-flight goals have come against London clubs. One of those strikes came against Arsenal when he played for Brighton in 2022/23. Additionally, Bukayo Saka’s opener in Madrid set Arsenal on their way. It marked his tenth goalscoring appearance of the season, nine of which ended in victory and one in a draw.
Interestingly, none of Ipswich’s last six matches saw their opponents receive a first-half booking.
