West Ham’s challenging season continues with little sign of improvement, as their last seven matches across all competitions have yielded just a single victory.
The start of Graham Potter’s tenure has been far from ideal, but with a ten-point cushion above the relegation zone ahead of the weekend’s action, he still has room to instill his philosophy and turn things around.
Finding a way to make the team more resilient will be a key priority, but there are at least some positives to build on. The only victory under Potter so far came at the London Stadium in an entertaining 3-2 success over Fulham. The return to home comforts should be a welcome one, particularly as Potter has an excellent managerial record against Brentford, remaining unbeaten in six meetings. His teams have also kept clean sheets in the last four encounters.
Despite that impressive history, West Ham cannot afford to underestimate a Brentford side that has recently found its form on the road. After a frustrating run of nine away league games without success, the Bees have now put together back-to-back wins on their travels. Another victory here would mark the first time in their Premier League history that they have secured three consecutive away wins.
Brentford will also take confidence from their strong record in this fixture, having scored in all seven previous Premier League meetings between the sides. That represents the longest run of matches against any opponent in which they have consistently found the net. Given that both clubs have averaged just one point per game in London derbies since the start of last season, a tightly contested encounter could be on the cards.
One player eager to make an impact will be Jarrod Bowen, who found the net against Chelsea in the last round. That goal brought him to 49 in the Premier League, leaving him just one away from becoming only the second West Ham player to reach a half-century in the competition, following in the footsteps of Michail Antonio. On the other side, Kevin Schade will look to continue his impressive form, having scored in Brentford’s last away match and extended his unbeaten streak when finding the net to 13 games.
Expect late drama, as each of West Ham’s last seven matches has featured a goal beyond the 70th minute. With both teams in need of points for different reasons, this London derby promises to be an intriguing battle filled with key moments at both ends of the pitch.
