Man Utd Set to Land Xavi Simons for £67m as Transfer Case Intensifies

Manchester United could finally sign a former target of Erik ten Hag, with Xavi Simons expected to leave RB Leipzig in a blockbuster summer deal.

Moreover, Ten Hag, during his tenure at Old Trafford, signed several Dutch stars and ex-Ajax players, and he was particularly eager to bring the Netherlands international on board. Reports reveal that United made contact last summer following a demand from Ten Hag.

However, United could not complete the deal because Simons chose to join Leipzig in Germany at the time. Consequently, the opportunity has resurfaced this summer for the talented attacking midfielder to switch allegiances. In addition, this twist has reignited transfer market speculation among fans and pundits.

This season, the versatile No 10—who can also play as a left winger—has notched five goals and four assists in 18 appearances. Furthermore, the Amsterdam-born ace has dazzled opponents with exceptional dribbling and clinical finishing. Thus, his performances have bolstered his reputation as a rising star in European football.

On January 30, it emerged that Leipzig activated their option to make Simons’ loan move from Paris Saint-Germain permanent for €50million (approximately £41.7m/$51.7m). His contract now runs until 2027, which further enhances his market value. As a result, his stock is rising, and clubs are closely monitoring his situation.

Moreover, German journalist Christian Falk has hinted at a “gentleman’s agreement” that might facilitate Simons’ departure from Leipzig this summer. He told CaughtOffside, “It’s looking likely that Leipzig will sell Xavi Simons in the summer transfer window.” Falk explained that sealing the deal for €50m is relatively modest for a player who could easily be valued at around €80m (roughly £66.7m/$82.7m).

Competition from Big Clubs

Additionally, Falk noted that Liverpool, Manchester City, and Manchester United are all interested in the talented midfielder. The fact that Simons is only 21 means he certainly won’t remain at Leipzig for his entire career. Furthermore, Leipzig’s decision to sign him came because PSG could not loan out more than six players in Europe, a constraint that ultimately worked in their favor.

Simons would likely thrive under the guidance of Ruben Amorim at United, where he could occupy one of the two No 10 roles behind the main centre-forward. Nevertheless, the club faces the challenge of convincing him that Old Trafford is the ideal destination for the next stage of his career. Simons views himself as a Champions League player, which poses questions given that United currently languish in 13th place in the Premier League.

Meanwhile, Sir Jim Ratcliffe has reportedly decided on pursuing long-term target Harry Kane to form United’s new No 9, especially after the Red Devils missed out on him to Bayern Munich. Kane’s release clause at Bayern is expected to drop to £54m in January 2026, potentially opening the door for a deal. In addition, Wolverhampton Wanderers star Matheus Cunha, whose exit clause of £62m will become active at the end of the season following his recent four-and-a-half-year contract extension, also remains a prime target for United.
