Ruben Amorim has finally expressed his relief over Marcus Rashford’s long-anticipated loan move to Aston Villa, and he did so with candor.
Moreover, the Manchester United boss made it clear that he struggled to influence the 27-year-old’s mindset. Consequently, his frank assessment has ignited debate across football circles.
Notably, Amorim revealed that he had not played Rashford in the last 13 games. Furthermore, he admitted that he would rather select his 63-year-old goalkeeper coach, Jorge Vital, than rely on the unsettled Rashford. In addition, he pointed to concerns over the striker’s attitude during training sessions.
Over recent months, speculation regarding Rashford’s future at Manchester United had intensified. However, the situation reached a turning point when the striker joined Aston Villa on loan late in the January transfer window. As a result, questions about his long-term role now fall under the jurisdiction of Villa boss Unai Emery.
In the run-up to United’s FA Cup tie against Leicester City at Old Trafford, Amorim emphasized that his focus remains solely on the upcoming games until the summer. Additionally, he stressed that the ongoing Rashford saga is thankfully behind him. Therefore, he suggested that any lingering inquiries be redirected to Unai Emery.

Amorim did not mince his words when he explained his differences with Rashford. He stated, “I couldn’t get Marcus to see the way you’re supposed to play football and to train the way I see it.” Moreover, he clarified that the decision to send Rashford on loan—made together with Tyrrell (Malacia) and Antony—was a necessary step, even if it meant keeping some players without a transfer.
Rashford’s departure has undoubtedly left Manchester United lighter on firepower, especially after Antony joined Real Betis on loan. In contrast, during the match against Crystal Palace, Amorim opted to deploy Kobbie Mainoo as a false nine while keeping Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee on the bench. Consequently, this tactical shift highlights the ongoing adjustments within the squad.
Furthermore, Amorim stressed the urgent need to find players capable of performing in multiple positions. He explained that the team’s style of play currently creates numerous chances but falls short when it comes to scoring. Additionally, he noted that incorporating a player like Patrick Dorgu could provide an extra winger option on both flanks.
Finally, Amorim pinned his hopes on the rest of the attacking line-up stepping up their game. He confidently asserted that Amad Diallo, Bruno Fernandes, and Kobbie Mainoo can each score more goals if given the right opportunity. In summary, he believes that with time and tactical adjustments, Manchester United will improve and overcome their current challenges.
