Former Premier League referee David Coote has made headlines for a deeply personal and turbulent story that intertwines his professional life with struggles over his identity.
In December 2024, Coote was dismissed from his role following damning revelations, including offensive comments about Jurgen Klopp and a video allegedly showing him using cocaine. Yet, behind the controversy lies a man grappling with the intense pressures of his profession and the challenges of coming out in what he describes as a “macho world.”
In an emotional interview, Coote revealed that his drug use stemmed from a combination of career stress and the fear of living authentically as a gay man in football. His story, however, isn’t entirely one of isolation. Back in 2022, Coote privately reached out to Zander Murray, the first openly gay Scottish footballer, to express solidarity. Murray recently confirmed the interaction, recounting how Coote had empathized with his experience of homophobia and media scrutiny, even as he was quietly struggling with his own identity.
“David reached out to me when I came out,” Murray shared with talkSPORT. “He was resonating with my story and admitted he was struggling with his sexuality. He supported me when I faced abuse online, and I could tell he was using vices to cope with his own pain, whether it was alcohol or drugs.” While Murray acknowledged the mistakes Coote has made, he also condemned the homophobic abuse the ex-referee has faced in the aftermath of his dismissal, calling it “absolutely disgusting.”

Coote’s journey into refereeing began at the young age of 14, a career path that eventually led him to the heights of officiating in the Premier League. Yet, his rise came at a cost. Coote revealed he hid his emotions and sexuality for years, skills that may have served him well on the pitch but proved damaging in his personal life. “I felt shame as a teenager,” he admitted, recalling how he only came out to his parents at 21 and to his friends at 25. The burden of secrecy, combined with the relentlessness of his job, ultimately led to destructive behaviors.
Reflecting on the leaked video that led to his dismissal, Coote expressed regret and disconnection from his past actions. “I don’t even recognize myself in that video,” he said. “I wasn’t reliant on drugs daily, but it became a way to escape the relentless pressures of refereeing. It’s shameful to admit, but that was me at my lowest.” Despite the fallout, the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) has pledged to support Coote as he navigates this challenging chapter.
Zander Murray, who retired in 2024 after a career that included stints at Motherwell and other Scottish clubs, believes Coote’s admission is a step forward. “I haven’t kept close contact with him, but I know he’s been struggling for a long time. His story is a reminder of the immense pressure and stigma that still exists in football,” Murray said. As Coote begins his path to recovery, his story shines a spotlight on the hidden toll of high-pressure careers and the courage it takes to live authentically in an unforgiving industry.
