Jamie Carragher has suggested that Aston Villa should consider selling Jhon Duran, the Colombian forward who has impressed with his finishing ability and goalscoring exploits this season.
Duran has become one of the Premier League’s breakout stars, earning a reputation as a “super sub” after netting 12 goals in just 29 appearances. His remarkable ability to score both quick one-touch finishes and stunning long-range strikes has caught the attention of top clubs, including Arsenal and Chelsea.
Despite his impressive goal tally, Duran has found himself behind Ollie Watkins in the Villa pecking order, starting just four Premier League games this season. The 21-year-old has averaged just 36 minutes per match, which has sparked frustration. Watkins, on the other hand, has been one of the league’s top performers, with 80 goals and 34 assists in 200 appearances for Villa. His consistent form has made it difficult for Duran to secure a regular starting spot, and manager Unai Emery has seldom played them together, with the pair managing only eight goals in the 35 matches they’ve been on the pitch simultaneously.

Carragher, speaking on Sky Sports, argued that it would be in both Duran’s and Villa’s best interests to part ways. “I’d sell Jhon Duran,” Carragher said. “You’ve got Ollie Watkins, who’s your main man, and you can’t have a player like Duran constantly coming off the bench for 15-20 minutes. It’s not going to work for either of them.” Carragher suggested that Villa could secure £50-60 million for Duran, a figure that could help reinvest in other areas of the squad. The former Liverpool defender also acknowledged Duran’s potential but emphasized the need for him to find a club where he can play regularly.
Both Arsenal and Chelsea are reportedly interested in securing Duran’s signature, with West Ham United previously having a £57 million bid rejected earlier this month. Arsenal, in particular, are in the market for a striker to bolster their attacking options, with Kai Havertz the only fit option in the number nine role. However, Havertz, often deployed as a midfielder, is not a natural centre-forward, leaving Mikel Arteta’s side in need of further firepower. Chelsea, meanwhile, are also on the lookout for a striker after Nicolas Jackson’s form has dipped significantly since a strong start to the season.
Villa Want More Money
Villa, however, is reportedly holding out for a significant fee, with some reports claiming they want at least £85 million for Duran. This hefty price tag could be a deterrent for some clubs, but Arsenal and Chelsea, with their substantial financial backing, may still be tempted to make a move. The Colombian’s potential has made him one of the most coveted young talents in Europe, and a bidding war between Premier League giants could be on the horizon.
In addition to Duran, Arsenal are also reportedly making moves in the transfer market for other talents. The club is set to hold talks with Rosenborg’s starlet Sverre Nypan, who has reportedly arrived in London to discuss his next steps. Arsenal faces competition from Manchester City for the midfielder, whose potential has drawn significant interest. Moreover, Athletic Club’s winger Nico Williams is another player Arsenal is keen on, with reports suggesting a £49 million bid is being prepared as they battle Tottenham Hotspur for his signature. As Arsenal looks to strengthen their squad, Duran’s potential move could be just the beginning of a busy transfer window for the Gunners.
