Tottenham Hotspur’s miserable season took another heavy blow on Sunday as they were handed a 3-2 defeat by Everton at Goodison Park.
With this defeat marking their 12th loss in 22 Premier League matches, the pressure continues to mount on Spurs and their manager, Ange Postecoglou. The North London side’s latest performance prompted a fierce critique from former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher, who did not hold back in his condemnation of Tottenham’s current state.
Carragher, known for his candid assessments, labeled Tottenham’s performance as a “mess” during his commentary on Sky Sports. The former Reds centre-back couldn’t hide his frustration, especially after Spurs’ dismal first-half showing, which saw them trail 3-0 by the break. Goals from Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Iliman Ndiaye, and an own-goal from Archie Gray had the Toffees cruising, leaving Spurs with a mountain to climb.
Carragher didn’t mince his words when describing the disarray at Tottenham, comparing the team to “a kids’ academy team.” The ex-defender remarked that Spurs were playing as if they had no direction, with the coaching staff continuing to encourage them to play in the same manner despite the evident lack of results.
“It’s like watching a kids’ academy team where they just keep playing the same way and the coach keeps telling them, ‘don’t worry, keep doing it. Results don’t matter’,” said Carragher, painting a damning picture of Tottenham’s current mentality.

The match itself was a frustrating affair for Spurs. Everton took full advantage of a disorganised Tottenham side, with Calvert-Lewin opening the scoring in the 11th minute. Ndiaye doubled the lead shortly after, before Gray’s unfortunate own-goal compounded Spurs’ woes just before half-time. By the time the whistle blew for the break, it was already clear that Postecoglou’s men were on the ropes.
Tottenham did show a flicker of hope in the second half, with Dejan Kulusevski pulling one back in the 77th minute. The Swedish winger scored a delicate finish, giving Spurs a brief lifeline. However, Richarlison’s late strike in added time at the back post only served as a consolation, and Spurs were unable to mount any serious comeback. In the end, the 3-2 scoreline did little to reflect the extent of their failure.
Carragher didn’t spare any criticism for Spurs after their calamitous first half. He focused on the sequence leading to Gray’s own-goal, explaining how it epitomised Tottenham’s current predicament.
“It’s a mess,” Carragher declared. “Tarkowski gets his opportunity on the earlier set-piece, and he comes in again. It’s just unfortunate for Archie Gray. He’s just got to throw his leg at it. It comes at him very quickly.” Despite the own-goal being largely out of Gray’s control, Carragher’s frustration with Spurs was palpable. “You can’t be getting beat 3-0 at half-time against Everton. It could have been worse. This is a mess,” he added.
The loss at Goodison Park leaves Spurs languishing in 15th place in the Premier League table, a far cry from the lofty expectations that accompanied Postecoglou’s appointment at the start of the season. The Australian manager’s philosophy and high pressing game have been met with mixed results, and it’s clear that the team’s defensive frailties remain a major issue. Despite the mounting pressure, Postecoglou remained defiant after the match.
The Spurs boss was quick to insist that he has not lost belief in his players, despite their struggles. “No, it doesn’t. If you look at the situation we’re in, it will eventually dissipate. I certainly hope and believe it will,” Postecoglou said in his post-match comments. “We’ll give ourselves the opportunity to get consistency in performance and results. I certainly haven’t lost belief or determination to turn it around, and the players showed in the second half that they haven’t either.”
While Postecoglou’s optimism is commendable, the reality for Spurs is that they face a significant uphill battle to turn their season around. The team has shown glimpses of quality in patches, but the overall consistency and resilience required to compete at the top end of the Premier League simply hasn’t been there.
With the January transfer window open, many Tottenham fans are hoping that their club can reinforce their squad and provide Postecoglou with the tools to rectify their dire situation. However, given the club’s ongoing struggles on the pitch, it remains to be seen whether they will be able to attract the necessary reinforcements to push for a higher league position.
Carragher’s comments are a stark reminder of the reality Tottenham faces under Postecoglou’s stewardship. While the manager may be optimistic, the performances on the pitch suggest that major changes are needed if Spurs are to avoid the threat of relegation. For now, Tottenham’s poor form continues to be a major talking point, and until they find consistency, they will remain under intense scrutiny from fans, pundits, and former players alike.
Spurs’ next challenge will be crucial as they look to bounce back from this disheartening defeat. With matches coming thick and fast in the Premier League, Postecoglou’s side must find a way to start delivering results, or risk another season of underperformance and frustration.
