Nick Chubb isn’t one for dramatics. Yet, Thursday night’s matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Cleveland carries a storyline that even Chubb’s quiet demeanor can’t erase.
Four hundred and thirty days after a devastating knee injury in a prime-time clash with the Steelers, the Cleveland Browns’ star running back returns to the same rivalry. For Chubb, though, it’s business as usual.
“It’s just the same normal game for me, pushing the same way,” Chubb told reporters earlier this week. “Looking forward to going out there and playing against a great team.”
The injury, suffered in September 2023, was one of the most harrowing moments of Chubb’s career. A collision with Minkah Fitzpatrick left Chubb’s MCL, meniscus, and ACL in need of surgical repair. Despite the severity, Chubb has maintained his stance that Fitzpatrick’s hit wasn’t dirty. “Talked to him on the field when it happened, that’s about it,” he said, brushing off any animosity.
Myles Garrett, Chubb’s teammate and one of the Browns’ defensive stalwarts, has marveled at Chubb’s resilience throughout his recovery. “The guy is coming back from not one, but two [knee injuries],” Garrett noted. “To get back to even 99% of that, 95% of that, takes a whole hell of a lot of work. He did everything to put himself in position to make huge plays for us and be that cornerstone as he always has been.”

Chubb’s return to action came in Week 7 against the Cincinnati Bengals, where he scored a touchdown in an emotional comeback. Still, the 2024 season has been a grind for the 28-year-old. Through four games, Chubb has rushed for 163 yards on 53 carries, averaging just 3.1 yards per attempt—a career-low. Yet, the Browns’ overall struggles (2-8) have mirrored his tough start.
Chubb is unshaken. “Since I’ve been here, I’ve always prided myself in going out there and no matter the circumstance, having a good game,” Chubb said. “Just getting my mind and body ready for that.”
As he prepares for his 11th meeting with the Steelers, Chubb’s history against Pittsburgh offers a mixed bag. In 10 games, he’s topped 100 rushing yards only twice and has found the end zone just twice. Thursday night, however, presents a chance to rewrite that narrative.
The weather may play to his strengths. Forecasts predict temperatures in the 30s with a chance of snow showers, a condition Chubb welcomed with a rare grin. “It should always be running weather,” he said.
For Chubb, the game isn’t about revenge or proving a point. It’s about consistency and embracing the physical battle the Steelers always bring. “I mean, it’s a football game. I got to go out there and play,” he said.
Despite his calm demeanor, Chubb’s quiet determination resonates with teammates and fans alike. His return to the field after such a significant setback serves as a reminder of his relentless work ethic and team-first mindset.
While the spotlight will undoubtedly focus on his return to a familiar foe, Chubb will keep his head down, treating Thursday night as just another game. Yet for those watching, it’s anything but.
“Rain, sleet, or snow,” Chubb said, “I’m always ready to go.”
