Detroit Lions kicker Jake Bates’ road to the NFL has been as unexpected as his stunning 58- and 52-yard field goals that secured a wild 26-23 comeback against the Houston Texans.
Bates, who worked as a brick salesman with Acme Brick in Houston before reigniting his football career, delivered in high-stakes fashion, leaving fans and teammates in awe.
“It almost feels scripted, too good to be true,” Bates said, reflecting on his improbable journey.
A Hollywood-Style Rise to the NFL
Bates’ football journey could be a movie plot. Growing up in the Houston area, Bates was initially a soccer player and only joined his high school football team as a senior. After playing college soccer at Central Arkansas, he walked on as a kickoff specialist at Texas State, eventually transferring to Arkansas. Though he never attempted a field goal in college, his powerful leg earned him an invite to the Texans’ training camp last year. When he was cut, he returned to sales—but football wasn’t done with him yet.
In late 2023, Bates tried out for the United Football League (UFL) and signed with the Michigan Panthers, where he impressed by hitting multiple field goals from beyond 60 yards. This standout performance led to a call from the Detroit Lions, who signed him in the spring of 2024.

Proving His Mettle
On Sunday, Bates’ two massive kicks came when Detroit needed them most, securing a memorable win after the team overcame a 23-7 halftime deficit marred by five Jared Goff interceptions. “I’ve never been hoisted like that,” Bates said. “Seeing the sideline embrace me was a cool moment.”
Coach Dan Campbell had confidence in his kicker from the start. Reflecting on Thursday’s practice, where Bates nailed a similar long-range attempt, Campbell said, “I just felt like he’s going to make it, and he did.”
Sunday’s 58-yarder tied Bates for the third-longest field goal in Lions history since at least 1960. With a perfect 14-for-14 field goal record this season, including three from 50-plus yards, Bates has proven his consistency on the field.
Living the Dream
Reflecting on his journey, Bates shared, “I just don’t deserve this. I was a soccer player growing up. I idolized NFL players, and now, to be here, I’m still pinching myself.”
From a brick sales job to game-winning kicks in the NFL, Bates’ story is a reminder of perseverance and unexpected turns on the path to living out one’s dreams.
